About an hour ago my Parrotlet ("Bird") was playing with my iphone and when I went to pick up the phone, it completely slipped out of my hand and crashed into him. Being an iphone, it is decently heavy. He immediately screeched and flew away. It happened so quickly, I couldn't even see where the phone hit him. But then I noticed that he was holding his right foot up, tucked up into his belly.
I picked him up and he continued to hold his foot up. I could feel that the foot was quite hot, and it was a brighter pink/red compared to his other foot. When I set him down again, he was not putting hardly any weight on it.
Now, about an hour later, he is putting weight on it again, walking/running around, and even hopping down from things onto it, but he is still often picking it up and tucking it into his belly. And then it will become bright red and hot again.
I called around to a couple of the emergency vets in my area and they do not have avian vets on staff after-hours.
So, my question is, if his leg was actually broken, would he even be putting any weight on it at all? Should I assume that since he is putting weight on it, and walking/running/hopping around, that it's likely not broken? Or could it be broken despite still using it?
I love this little guy immensely and it kills me to think of him in pain. At the same time, I don't want to rush to an emergency vet a long way away if I'm just overreacting.
