Broken leg?

About an hour ago my Parrotlet ("Bird") was playing with my iphone and when I went to pick up the phone, it completely slipped out of my hand and crashed into him. Being an iphone, it is decently heavy. He immediately screeched and flew away. It happened so quickly, I couldn't even see where the phone hit him. But then I noticed that he was holding his right foot up, tucked up into his belly.

I picked him up and he continued to hold his foot up. I could feel that the foot was quite hot, and it was a brighter pink/red compared to his other foot. When I set him down again, he was not putting hardly any weight on it.

Now, about an hour later, he is putting weight on it again, walking/running around, and even hopping down from things onto it, but he is still often picking it up and tucking it into his belly. And then it will become bright red and hot again.

I called around to a couple of the emergency vets in my area and they do not have avian vets on staff after-hours.

So, my question is, if his leg was actually broken, would he even be putting any weight on it at all? Should I assume that since he is putting weight on it, and walking/running/hopping around, that it's likely not broken? Or could it be broken despite still using it?

I love this little guy immensely and it kills me to think of him in pain. At the same time, I don't want to rush to an emergency vet a long way away if I'm just overreacting.

Sorry to hear about this. Recently, my p'lett, Ricochet, was doing the same behavior as Bird. We didn't see what had happened, but his foot/leg was hot and reddish and he had pulled his leg/foot up and tucked it into his belly. He could stand, lightly, on his leg/foot. The next day, we took him to the vet and found out he had broken the largest toe on his left side. The break was right next to his ankle. The vet can't set bones on a birds leg, if it is just a fracture. A compound fracture is when the bone is separated at the break. This would be a different story.

It sounds like he has a simple fracture or a deep bruise. You must get him to a vet tomorrow, for sure, just to be safe.

What the vet did for Ricochet was examine the foot/leg and did an X-Ray. Some vets do not do X-Rays, but my vet is an avian vet. He found the fracture and all we had to do was just keep an eye out on Ricochet. It took a couple of weeks before he was back to normal.

Even with the fracture on Ricochet, he was able to carry on okay. They know when to be careful. What you Must watch is the swelling! If it gets real bad and real red, this is a warning sign that he may have a serious fracture,,,,maybe even a compound fracture. If he has a compound fracture, he may pool his blood and this is so serious, that he will be in big danger.
I just remembered, the vet told me that since Ricochet could put weight on his leg, that this was a good sign.

If later on tonight you notice that Bird is swelling real bad and his leg is real red and hot, call the vet and tell them that you desperately need help from them, even though they are not an avian vet. Plead with them!

Tomorrow, get him to a vet. I hope you can!
If no one will see Bird, then call the nearest town. Vets usually open on Saturdays, but this virus may hinder this.

Keep us posted. I will be on this forum until about mid-night and I will keep checking this site.

Good luck! I'll say a prayer.

Do all the digits of his foot lie in a normal position? Does the toe or foot seem to lie at an unusual angle? If so, then there is probably a break. Hopefully, it is not broken.

Try to keep him warm and quiet. He needs to stay off that foot as much as possible to rest it. I would definitely have an avian vet look at it, especially if it remains red and becomes swollen.

Do you see any scrapes? If you do, you might want to clean the perches. You don’t want any infection.

I certainly hope that he is okay!

I’m going to call his regular avian vet first thing in the morning as soon as they open to see if they can see him right away.

It doesn’t appear to be swollen at all, and the redness is most prominent when he first brings it back down after having it tucked in his belly. He is definitely still lifting it up and tucking it away though.

His toes don’t appear to be at any weird angles... but then again it’s hard to tell.

I’ll get him in to the vet ASAP tomorrow.

Thank you for the insight! It’s much appreciated.
