When I was at the West Edmonton mall last week, I visited a private petstore (i.e. not a big chain). They had many birds in the store and in fact it was there that I first saw a parrotlet and fell in love with them. Now! OMG! I saw some green cheeked conures. They are fairly small, about the size of a cockatiel, playful, seem to have the same spunky personality as parrotlets. I am told they are quieter then the bigger conures, etc. I think I could make room for one if I tried. :) But not sure how much attention they need. If their cages were in proximity is it likely Sadie and a green cheeked would enjoy chirping at each other etc? They may require more time then I have but was wondering if anyone here had one and how they enjoyed it as a pet? No worries I am not leaping into buying another bird. But I am curious about these guys.

Look how cute they are!!

I had one and loved him! He was the best bird I have ever owned. He had severely splayed legs that we were never able to fully heal. Even with all the therapy he had the best personality. He was such a sweet little guy. He was extremely playful and so smart.

He followed us all over the house, climbed stairs using his beak, played with my son's lego toys, and loved to snuggle. He was so entertaining. We called him our stylist as he preened anyone who would let him.

He was pretty quiet and played well in his cage. They seem to have the same energy level and appetite as parrotlets. He passed away mysteriously about three years ago, we still miss him and tell his stories often.

They are adorable. Toby's breeder had about a dozen of them in different mutations. The cinnamon ones have the prettiest color tones to them and they are just so playful and cuddly. The bigger beaks scare me though. I know how bad a parrotlet bite can hurt and wonder what it feels like from those guys...lol

Does anyone have any experience with green cheeks interacting with parrotlets? I know Pacific parrotlets are known as little bullies, but I was just curious if they would keep each other company if caged seperately in the same room? I'm in love with the half-moon conures and cinnamon green cheeks. Not that I need another bird, but I *want* one. And since stepmom's tiel didn't like the cage that Toby was escaping from. I do have a really nice empty cage...
Probably won't get one, but just really curious as to if they could be friends.

Not sure about that, but I love the Half-moon Conures! Beautiful birds, and when tame, wonderful pets with personality.

They are native to Mexico - I have seen them in the wild closer to the Pacific coast than we are - well I did see 3 here on a birding outing, but not clear if they were escapees or naturally around here at 5,000'. Very unfortunately they are wild-trapped extensively, and illegally, and sold on street corners being swung in little round wire baskets. I would never buy a wild-caught bird (so many of them die before reaching a buyer), and very few breeders raise them since the illegal ones are numerous and relatively inexpensive, I think about $80.

Hearing about wild-caught birds breaks my heart. Our babies are lucky in that they weren't snatched from loving families in the wild, open world and netted, caged and subjected to horrible conditions. They merely have passed from one loving hand to another in most cases. I would never buy a wild-caught bird and there really should be some way to stop the practice :(

Hi there
I just put my introduction post up...I have 3 parrotlets, one lovebird and a yellow sided green cheek conure. (which is just a color variation of a green cheek)
My conures name is Kirby and he is WONDERFUL!! He is VERY sucky, would ride around hanging on my shirt all day if I let him. Hes an acrobat and a clown .....just an all around great guy. I would recommend one in a heartbeat!
He is in a cage beside 2 of my parrotlets and has only been there for about a week and they still are having squabbles but my fingers are crossed that eventually they will get along :)
Let me know if you have any other questions I may be able to help with.

My question is how do you manage to give the parrotlets and the conure each quality time and attention? Right now, when I get up I get Sadie up (she sleeps in a covered sleep cage in my room) We go to the kitchen and I make her up breakfast and fill all her water bowls. She likes to hang on me while I have coffee, etc. I then put her in her big cage while I shower and after I get dressed I let her out again until I go to work. I leave for work around 11:00 and get back by 3:00 most days. I spend a couple of hours at home at which time I change her food and water and play with her a bit. I go back to work by 5:00. When I get home in the evening, she is usually asleep and I take her quietly to her sleep cage where she goes straight up to her sleep perch. During the month of August I am on holiday and Sadie gets a lot of out of the cage time and attention and that's where I am most likely getting the illusion I have time for a second bird. Yikes! :) If I had a second bird I would be busy alternating who was in and out of their cage. Lol, I am still going to keep the idea of a green cheeked on the back burner though.

On Stitch's talking thread, this YouTube video was posted showing a green cheek out playing with a parrotlet so I guess it answers the question as to whether or not they can keep each other company. Though I guess neither bird appears to be particularly enjoying it...lol

Here's a picture of the little half-moon conure that I've been tempted to fill up my extra cage with:

Isn't he precious! The big head on the little body is just too funny!

Nikki my husband is already trying to fill the hole left by my wee Pickles and is telling me to get a conure. The local Pet store has 2 of them both of whom do a pick me dance when you see them, one is a sun conure the other a pineapple conure. Is there a difference in nature for either of these birds, I know they are loud but does one have a louder horn than the other ? :D My husband says he wants loud but I'm sure he will be impressed when Junior starts yelling in the middle of his movie. Thanks for any help.

From what I've read.... sun conures are of the aratinga subspecies and green-cheeks and color mutations are of the pyhurra subspecies. The aratinga subspecies is much louder as a whole. The breeder I spoke with said that you can use the "color rule" to determine the loudness of a conure. The brighter the color combination, the louder the bird. For example, in loudness: green-cheek< half-moon conure < jenday conure < sun conure.

I know the Sun Conures are pretty loud little guys because my local PetSmart had one and everytime he was left alone he would start shrieking and it practically deafened everyone in the store. So, they were paying an employee to sit there with the bird and keep their hand in the cage with it so it would know it wasn't alone...LOL I feel so sorry for the person who ended up taking that bird home with it having the expectation that someone would always have their hand in the cage if it shrieked...LOL

I think its going to be the pineapple for us if he's still there. The lady at the store said he wants cuddles and climbs to the top of the cage to get his beak rubbed.

My husband says that he can't wait to get it as I need the distraction and as the other birds are fine is thinking Pickles was more likely genetic. Anyway if he twists my arm the bird would be put in total isolation in my room. I think I saw that the minimum time is a month and I spend a lot of time in there anyway so it would be fine.

What other cautions should I take ? I'm guessing a good hand wash after handling, a change of shirt and just keep bird dishes etc. away from each other.

Banjo who was bonded to Pickles has now attached himself to our 8 year old, its so sweet he lets her rub him and sits and listens while she reads to him. She was as heartbroken as me but he is really helping her.

I think it's a good choice to get another bird quickly :) You were so caught off-guard that it would help you heal faster.

A conure looks a little more sturdy and resilient than the parrotlets (though I wouldn't trade my little parrotlet for the world). The pineapples are gorgeous. I saw some at the bird show I went to in Atlanta. Crossing fingers for you that the little one is still there at the store. If for some reason that one sold and you need me to bring you a hand-fed one from around here (there are tons of them) just lemme know! I can deliver! hehe I need a beach vacation anyways :p

Aah Nikki the enabler :D I have to say until I read your email I have been going back and forwards as to if I should get another bird and you helped me decide yes I do need one. Right now I feel so lonely, I have my great husband, child and other birds but I need a replacement for my precious Pickles. I think to annoy me tonight our cockatiel who has been a couch potato decided to cuddle my husband, I swear she stuck her tongue out at me :p

I don't have the money for a bigger cage right now but Pickles had quite a large cage which I have scoured so its ready. Nikki if the baby who rolled on his back last time I saw him is gone I may take you up on your offer :) in Savannah we have much less choice on where to get our babies from.

I will let you all know if I get my baby tomorrow, of course in the chit chat section as he won't be a parrotlet and will post a picture if I get him.

You guys are really helping me through the pain and I will still post to this great place, maybe I could pretend I have a new breed of parrotlet ;) If anyone knows of a good conure site I'd appreciate it if you let me know, now I'm going to be nervous to see if I get the baby that caught my eye. Oh yes we have already picked the name Gizmo :D well my husband picked it and I liked it.

I went and looked and was enamoured by her and her pets. She sells her birds for a little more but it looks definitely worth it, you can see they are all so loved.

Saying that I have given Gizmo a glass pie dish daily so she can have a bath and she ignored it, tonight she decided to have a bath in an eggcup sized dish. We got her another better sized bowl but it was amazing how well she did with the little dish. From this I now know to never ever take her in the kitchen if I plan to cook as she would dive in the water pot. Luckilly she is in quarantine in our bedroom, well kind of lucky she stares at me so I have to cover her :D
