Why does my parrotlet sleep on the grates at the bottom?

Welcome to the community.

Can you tell us a little about your little one? Boy / girl? How old are they? How long have you had them? Have they been sitting all this time or is this a new activity? Can you get us a photo of his sleep cage / area? Does he perch normally and just sleep on the grate?

The more we know about things the better we can give info.
Sleeping on the bottom of the cage can be an indication of two things. Your bird is ill or if it's a female she may be egg bound. Even though it is not common, I have heard of some parrotlets sleepiing on the bottom of their cages, and they are fine. But if your bird is spending night and day at the bottom of their cage, you may want to have them checked out by an avian vet. Of course if anything doesn't seem right it's always best to have them looked at.
Blue is a 10 month old beautiful boy and I purchased him from a breeder. He has been at the bottom of the cage it seems when I look in at him in morning. I i’ve noticed this for a long time I don’t think it has anything to do with illness but curious why he does it.

Blue spends the day out of the cage. He only sleeps in his cage at night, so I hope it’s gonna be OK. Thank you for your Info Anya
As a general rule parrotlets tend to sleep high. But that is just general, over the years on here I have heard of parrotlets sleeping on the bottom, under items, hanging between things, upside down and many things between. So while strange it is not completely unknown. Given that it can be a sign that there is an issue so you are wize to notice and to keep an eye on it. I would also start weighing Blue regularly to make sure he is keeping his weight up. This is a thing most of us regularly do to keep an eye on things with our little once since they do not like to tell us when they are sick. I weigh my guys about once a week or so.

I am just curious. where are his perches in his cage? They up high? what size are they? I have seen some go to the bottom just because they do not like the ones up high to sleep in.

Thank you very much for your information. I have many punches in his cage and toys but now I noticed none that are very high as I was trying to avoid him pooping in his food and water. I am going to change that and see what happens. Thank you again Ozzie
