Shiny Things!

2282 Views 10 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  ginziputzi
Our p'let Pip ignores most of his toys (and is still scared of the play gym we got him 4 months ago), but he loves to play with my earrings and our wedding rings. I know some metals can be bad for birds, and I discourage him from playing with things that could break under his mighty beak. Does anyone have recommendations for toys that would mimic his interest in shiny things?

We have gotten away from "shiny stuff" especially mirrors since our Ringneck destroyed a stainless steel one, trying to fight the bird in the mirror .
I just try all kinds of different things with my little girl...in so doing, here and there I find something she really likes.

There are toys that can have a number of shiny bells on them, as well as those that can have brighter, more sparkly colors...maybe Pip would like some of those.

Good luck! :)
Mine loves things with bells on it. They are shiny. You could try that.
My Huey loves to shred things, I buy toys that have the balls or stars and beads and usually there is a tiny bell on the bottom, he loves to shake the toy while he shreds.
Infant toys...seriously, go to the infant section for babies under 1 yr old. They have a ton of nice shiny, soft and crinkly toys and most of them already have soft fabric hooks to hang onto things. Some of my birds favorite toys are the ones I got in the human baby section. The Cockatiels have this suction cup toy that sits on the desk, it spins around, makes noise, has things they can chew on. Baby rattles, there are safety mirrors on toys...all sorts of things.

Also, what type of toys have you tried. I've yet to meet a bird, ANY bird who didn't like to shred stuff up. Have you tried shredders? Heck, even a pile of paper that he can tear up might get him started, then you could make a toy using that paper and gradually change it out. Some birds like bells. My female P'let loves them, but they make my male go insane. Also, some of those little plastic cat balls with the bells in them are usually a good choice for toys.
So far Kiwi is the same, loves anything that is shiny and has a bell sound. So his favorite is my cheese slicer. I don't let him have it but he gets SO excited when I take it out of the drawer!
Kiwi is definitely a bell bird too. And a big time shredder. One of her favourite past times is shredding a paper towel stuffed in her cage bars.

Ollie at 8 mo. is very interested in my earring, rings, shiny metals of all sorts! If I am not carefully watching him, he would shred plastic bags, wires, everything but his toys. No mirrors? Not interested.
