What is the age range when parrotlets begin to pick up sounds, tunes, and spoken words? Is there anything that can be done to promote their learning curve?

Any personal experience would be warmly welcomed!

Thank You!
Lindsey & Oliver:)

My Eddie is about 6 months old and he's doing some talking.... he says 'whatcha doing?' 'hello' and is attempting 'good morning' with lackluster results! He also imitates my finches and whistles a wolf call.

Gilligan started talking at just over 3 months of age or so. He started off with the kiss sound, then the wolf whistle, then the charge whistle followed by "charge". Then it was "pretty bird", "Gilligan!" "Let's go Angels" and tonight he said "Gimme kiss baby" which is funny because I usually say Gimme kiss or Hi baby, but he put "gimme kiss baby" together, LOL. I have been saying "here kitty kitty" to him lately when my cat comes nearby and tonight he was working on that but it's not quite there yet, LOL.

Ive heard 3 months to over a year. I think it depends on the stimulation the bird is receiving and how much it is able to learn. Oliver hasnt talked yet but he mumbles to himself a lot. I know he can comprehend what "nite nite" means because he will crawl up on his toy where he sleeps. Not there quite yet but hopefully soon!!

Hi Lindsay,

I agree with the above comments. I bought Marley not really knowing how old he was and as soon as he felt comfortable with me, he began to make noises, songs and words. He usually does it when he is all alone, but when he is in the mood, he will immatate anything from a beep to a squeek, kiss noises and portions of songs. I have had him for a few years and he was totally untame when I purchased him.

I am sure that your baby will start to immate noises when he realizes that he gets your attention from it.

My Casino starting mumbling at about 3 months so I spent about 20 minutes one evening telling him "Who's a good boy?" when he had his attention focused on my mouth. The next morning I was lying in bed in the next room and heard him get it right! A few days later he started doing it in front of us, and he now (at five months) speaks about a dozen words and phrases, and learns new ones at a rate of one every two weeks or so, depending on whether I work on it intentionally.

He also mixes them up into conversation, especially with my boyfriend. He was sweeping up spilled seed the other day and Casino asked him "Whatcha doin?" He responded "Sweeping up your mess!" and Casino fluffed up his feathers and snuggled down on his perch and quipped "Good boy." without missing a beat! What a hambone.

LOL! That's great! Lydia the Grey will ask us while we're sweeping, "Is that poop?" and then she will follow with "That's a lot of poop"! All the while, she's looking at the floor!
