I've heard some have good luck by showing their birds videos of other birds talking. There are a bunch of cool YouTube videos of various parrotlets talking. My favorite is Koolaid. He cracks me up. Rough estimates I've found indicate that 80% of males will talk, where only 20% of females talk.

Does he try to bite you when you he is in his cage and you try to get him out? They're cage is "their" spot and its what protects them and makes them feel safe, so intruding their space can sometimes spark aggression. Mine comes right out for me, no questions asked. It helps to be calm and easy with them. It also helps if he knows "step up" means to perch on your finger, so it would help you to teach him this command, and get him used to it. Then when you approach his cage, tell him to step up as you slowly but steadily reach into his cage to get him. If he knows what you're trying to do, he is less likely to feel threatened when you try to remove him from his cage. Be sure to reward him each and every time he steps up, with lots of praise. Its important to do this every time so he associates your happiness and excitement with his listening.

Some people use treats and praise together to reward them, and over time, start taking the treats away and only doing it every so often, or when teaching their birds new tricks.

 

Great advice cr9c1! If your parrotlet is motivated by treats I would say that is probably the best way to start out. See if you can get him to hop onto your hand in the cage using millet or whatever other treat he particularly likes.

As far as talking I'm not really sure how to "teach" them. My boy just started on his own and keeps picking up new words all the time now. He is up to about 9 words/phrases. I just repeat the words I want him to know a TON, and try to use the words in context too. Another good thing to do is to sound really excited when you say the phrases you want him to learn. Also, have you tried listening when you aren't in the room and he is just chattering? It took Taz a while to say any words in front of me, and even still he is way more talkative when I'm in the other room your little guy may be talking and you don't even know it! Not all males learn to talk, but the fact that he likes listening to your voice is definitely a good sign. Just don't give up!

 

I taught my little guy to say YUM! by giving him a safflower seed and saying it while he was eating it. He picked it up really fast but was older when he really started talking

I find you have to find the right word/sound. My bird only picks up the words he likes to hear. The ones that really stuck with him were "pretty bird" and "tweet tweet". And repetition is key! Repeat the words as much as you can and try to associate the words with good things, like food he really likes. Good luck!

 

I have read and been told to look into your birds face as close as possible and keep repeating the word or phrase to him over and over and over again.
Some will talk, some will not.
I hold my little guy and say "I'm a good bird" over and over for about
10 -15 minutes each time, 2 or 3 times a day.
I also say night night when it's bed time, bye bye when we leave the house, dirty bird when I run the vacuum and so on. I also say "bless you" after I or someone else sneezes.
Wouldn't that floor someone to have the bird say "bless you"?

Be persistent and have patience.
I'm hoping he'll pick up on them.

 

Some birds may never learn to talk, but as others have said repetition is important and so is enthusiasm. The reason parrots often learn to swear is because there is so much passion in our words when we curse, lol. Remember that hard consonants (C, K, T) are easier than soft ones, and EEEE sounds work well too. Also make a habit out of listening before you enter a room - they often start practicing when they think we're out of earshot because they want to get it just right before saying it in front of anyone. That's how I caught Casino's first words - I had just jumped out of the shower and hadn't come around the corner yet when I heard him repeating, "who's a good boy?" over and over, lol.

 

So funny but also true. I have read that they do practice and my little Conway Tweety is practicing (I think) because I say "I a good boy" and he moves his beak but no sound comes out . . . maybe he'll be a mime . ha!
