I see a lot of you talking about your birds loving hemp seeds and wanted to know how you feed them. Do you give them as a treat or put them in the rotation as part of the diet?

I looked a little on Amazon and most of the organic kinds are dehulled is that what you want or do you get the ones with the hulls? Do they have any CBD in them at all and do you think this might have a calming effect on them?

If you have any links or the name of a brand you like let me know too.. thanks

Occasional treat for Jules. Sort of like sunflower seeds and hot pepper seeds.

Parrots hull their seeds before they eat them, so I wouldn't think it would matter either way whether you get the hulled or unhulled. I'd just get whatever was more easily available or cheaper. If you get unhulled it's not extra nutrients or anything, it's just another step for them in eating it.

Hello, Bryan!

I am glad you brought this subject up!
Bogie loved, and Ricochet loves Hemp seeds. When I first got Bogie and Ricochet, every evening I sat down next to the kitchen counter and hand fed them Hemp seeds, one by one. Bogie's avian vet said this was one of the best things I could do to help get the human/parrotlet bond to glue together! He said it was symbolic of the mother hen feeding the chick, thus creating a healthy bond.

I would get one seed and offer it to them. They would hull it and eat it. I would immediately give them one more...and one more...and one more! They would eat all night if I had the patience!

They both expected me to do this each evening. Until Bogie got sick, I fed him Hemp every night for 10 years!

Recently, Ricochet lost interest a little because he is so active. He has a feed bowl full of hemp seed in his cage and every evening, he goes over after din din and he eats a few seeds.

Hemp is nutritious. You can find Hemp seeds in human Health stores. Humans blend it up and add it to foods, protein shakes, etc. (Just like Flax seeds) . Blended, it smells like old peanut butter. Cooked hulled in Jiffy mix cornbread muffins, Ricochet loves to pick out the hemp as he eats cornbread. You can eat it too! Make Jiffy mix blueberry muffins and add real blueberries or hemp seeds or both! Add chopped almonds or walnuts, etc..

It's awesome to hear that your birds love hemp seeds! I give them to my bird as a treat, but I've heard of people incorporating them into their birds' diets. As for the dehulled vs. hulled seeds, I typically go for the dehulled ones to make it easier for my bird to eat. And as far as I know, hemp seeds don't contain any CBD, so I don't think it would have a calming effect on your birds. Speaking of CBD, have you ever considered giving it to your furry friend? I've been giving CBD oil to my dog, and it's been amazing for her anxiety and arthritis. I actually read some interesting articles about the best CBD oil for dogs on https://www.orlandomagazine.com/best-cbd-oil-for-dogs
