I've always seen cage bottoms with grates, to keep the bird out of their poop and dropped food. I'm noticing that used cages on Craigslist often don't have a grate. It seems like something necessary, but is it? I know some things are "weak preferences" and some are strong preferences, and while this seems like a strong preference, a search here only talked about what to put under the grate.
If grateless works, do you still use a liner? And if so, is newspaper still acceptable?
