Definitely safe - many foods have freeze dried fruits and veggies in them. I'm not certain on how nutritious they are compared to fresh, but the shelf stable aspect is pretty great.

Freeze dried fruit and veggies retain 97% of their nutritional value which is really good.

97% is pretty awesome! They aren't in my budget, but I definitely have been tempted. I'm not sure Tumi would eat them, of course, without re-hydrating them himself (he likes to put food in his water dish to make birdie "soup").

It is good for them! I sometimes eat Special K cereal with Strawberries added in the cereal. The strawberries are freeze dried and I used to give my Bogie and Ricochet the strawberries. They both loved them dry, but I had to give them all the berries, which left me with...none!
As soon as I brought out my box of cereal, Bogie would " fly with due haste " to grab what he could as I poured out the cereal into my bowl.

That's funny.
I give my birds freeze dried Raspberries and they love them. They have gotten extremely expensive though.

Freeze dried vegetables are great and very healthy. Even better when they are mixed with dried flowers and herbs. Another great food are sprouts made in Easy Sprouter. I typically make chops from fresh vegetables and greens, mix them with freeze dried stuff, sometimes with sprouts, pack into Ziplocs and keep in a freezer.
Some of the best mixes are available at China Prairie Products company and Mike and Mia company (UK, ships worldwide.)
