That looks like a Mourning Dove. They visit my deck almost every day, along with all the other neighborhood bird visitors. They are in the same Family as pigeons but a little smaller and more sleek. This one is puffed up.

She cines every night for the last 2 months and leavesjn the morning. I leave food but its never touched. She tried to come inside one day but I closed the window. I heard alot of cooing outside the window this morning. It was raining. It makes me sad 😔 to see her alone there like that 😢. Any suggestions

She/he is a Mourning Dove. They make those cooing sounds which sound mournful (hence the name) but are not. She probably finds that your ledge is a safe place to spend the night. I don’t know what your climate is like but they mostly migrate in the winter but some stay behind. We have them here too. I think she is perfectly fine. It is that cooing that often makes them sound so sad. They say when you hear one, it makes you think of lost loved ones. So true.

I live about 70 miles north of NYC and a few doves have remained for the winter. A few years ago, I rescued one with a leg injury in my back yard. My avian vet had a rehab person in their office at the time and they kept the dove for a couple of weeks while her broken leg mended. They called me to pick her up so she could be released in my yard and it was beautiful to see that she was reunited with her mate, who had faithfully remained nearby!

Thats awesome 👌. This one recently became very vocal at night and early morning. I read thats its mostly the males the makes the cooing sounds when they're trying to find a mate..I hope he finds her soon..seems pretty lonely 🙁
