I have a 4 1/2 month old parrotlet and something seems to be seriously wrong with him. For a couple of weeks now, he has been constantly looking like he’s opening his mouth and almost chewing on his tongue. And clicking his beak the entire time while doing this choking/distressed tongue chewing thing. And then he will frantically rub his beak on everything... his cage, perches, our fingers, etc. Then he will try to chew anything and everything. And sometimes he will then twist his head around backward while doing the weird beak open/tongue chewing, and then bring his head back around and shake it quickly. He will twist his head back and then bring it back around and shake it fast numerous times during these “episodes”. And his voice seems to be hoarse & quiet compared to normal.
I should note that he is absolutely, 100% not neck wiggling.
I took him to an avian vet about a week and a half ago and they looked up in the slit in the top of his mouth and didn’t see anything stuck up there. They blew air into his nostrails in case something was stuck. And they took xrays and didn’t see anything in his trachea, croup, or beak/nostrails. All they saw was some mucus in his mouth, and his backteria count was not normal. But other than that, they couldn’t find anything obviously wrong. They gave us 2 weeks of antibiotics, but they do not seem to be helping whatsoever as he is still having these episodes a lot.
It is incredibly painful to watch him doing this choking/beak rubbing/head shaking thing and he seems as if he’s almost panicking when it’s happening.
Does anyone have ANY idea what might be going on?!?
