Floor obsession is getting out of hand...

Hey all,
It's been a while since I've been on here! Good to be back.

I saw a thread in the Training section about this but most people seemed to say they just allow their birds on the floor/didn't seem too concerned. I was allowing it at first because there didn't seem to be much I could do, but it needs to stop now...

Lambeau, 4 years old, is very aggressive when on the floor. If I squat down to pick him up and he sees my hand before he sees my feet, he will step up. However if he sees my feet first, he runs full speed at them, biting them.

He is fully flighted, so he can leave the floor whenever he wants. He isn't on it all the time, but frequently enough to now be an issue. If I am doing my own thing in another part of the room he just sits quietly on the floor, but if I need to walk by he goes nuts.

The only thing I can come up with is consistently removing him from the floor and putting him in his cage briefly when he does it. So far it is not working.

Help please

Good to hear from you. Floor is mostly a non issue with us here, Huey loves it.

He did try to attack my feet the other day but he was in a mood anyway so back to his cage he went.

Huey loves to climb all around.

Do you use gently beak at all? Sometimes when Huey is a brat and in attack mode I say gentle beak and he stops and waits for beak rubs then he is just fine.

Thumbs up

Hi.
Welcome back! I wondered where you went. I am glad Lambeau is doing great. Gentle Beak is helpful, like rizzie 5022 suggested. When I had my Bogie for ten years, I had ten years of him floor walking and attacking me and my wife's feet. It didn't matter if we had socks on or not, he would attack, but if we had any type of shoe on, he left us alone. We had to wear shoes.

We tried everything over the years and it was just in him to attack our feet! ( even if we had our shoes off and were sitting on a couch). Like you, if I caught him early enough, he would step up on my finger and things would be fine.
Keep trying different things. Keep us posted!

I can't think of anything other than what your doing. I really worry about stepping on my Bourks so we have to be careful. I can't keep them off the floor though, they are ground dwellers by nature but all my parrotlet hate the floor. Funny how different they are.
Maybe add some incentive like a treat when he steps up from the floor without toe attacking.

Thanks everyone!

I have never taught him the gentle beak phrase, so maybe I will work on that first and go from there. We are also doing a long-distance move soon, so perhaps having his world turned upside down will reset him a little, lol... Fingers crossed.

I will try some different things and update this thread with the results!

Thanks again.

We had/have the same issue with Gigi. We tried everything to keep her off the floor but nothing worked, she became more obsessed the more we got on her about it.
She attacks our feet if we don't have shoes on. We have slippers on when she out and she doesn't attack at all. She loves playing with her ball on the floor. We are making her a bowling alley to play with since she pushes that ball all over the place.
But we don't do anything else while she is out. She is a rescue and we got her last November. So we are still working on things and making lots of mistakes I'm sure I am no help with keeping them off the floor but Dave told me his attacks when he sees feet and he wears shoes so we do that and now no attacking. Let me know if you find a remedy.

Pip has a foot fetish also. If I wear shoes, he hops on them and chews the laces if they have them. Bare feet though, he lowers his head and runs at them. He’s pretty fast on those little legs.

Bryan will become famous soon enough

It's probably fear more than anything. I have an ottoman with my chair and when Pip goes around my feet to get to the other side he will give a warning move kind of thing to my feet. (don't mess with me while I am passing.. hehe)

He still has not made his way to the floor... yet
