Zoo Med Avain Floor Sun Lamp w/5.0 lamp bulb.

Looking for some feed back on how many hours a day and how many days a week this lamp should be on? I did the burn out hours (150) and the lamp is 14 inches from the highest perch. Any input is greatly appreciated.

UV factors decrease over distance. I like to keep mine on for 8 hours for 18 inches above Jules head on her favorite perch.

Ours is on for three hours, and Huey is in front of a window and gets natural light from there.

Thank you for your reply. Do you think 14 inches is to close?

Kai is on the side of a big window but a large tree outside the window blocks most of the morning light and the sun moves around to the back of the house at noon. I usually don’t have him uncovered by 7:00 in the morning when he would get about two hours of good sun. I’ve been leaving the lamp on four to five hours every day. Do you think that is to little? Also, do you think the distance is ok?

You are within manufacturers spec. So you should be fine. Personally I prefer longer at greater distance to minimize chance of UV burns (sun burn). The closer the light the shorter duration you need to run them. At 14 in I would only run for 4 hours.

Also make sure that they can get out of the light if they want or become uncomfortable.

Thank you for your reply. I think I will move it to 18 inches above his highest perch to play safe. Appreciate you input.

I don't have the Zoo Med but I keep my FeatherBrite bulb at about 18 in and I leave it on 10 hours a day. (it is on a timer too)

I might be getting one of the Zoo Med next year though since it looks like FeatherBrite has changed over to led and want you to buy two bulbs now one for the full spectrum and another for UV.

Thank you for your reply. I moved the lamp to about 18 inches. Will leave it on longer. I’m happy with the Zoo Med Lamp. I use a 5.0 bulb which is what they recommend. Sorry to hear you may have to switch lamps. They are always changing things. A good way to get you to spend money.

I’ve only been putting it on three to fours a day and yes he has plenty of room to get away from it if he chooses. I did move it up though. How would I know if my bird was getting burned from the lamp? Kai appears to be just fine.
