Feeding Oliver - - so fussy

Oliver is 6 years old. He eats by himself OK, but around 5:30 he chips and chirps. Drives me to distraction.

By that time I have run out of options to satisfy him, so I get his food out of his cage and feed him from my shoulder. He makes a mess, but eats very well. Then he's happy and a lot quieter.

Being home most of the day isolating he loves me being around. My husband does very little interaction with him. Soooo, I am his flock.

Anyone else experience a bird like this?

Yup. Jules will eat when we are not around but mainly at just to keep from starving level. She really digs in when she is eating with us. She REQUIRES that she eats while very close to or on us. I have always thought it was a security or comfort of the flock thing.

I sort of hold her coop cup once a day and let her fill her crop up. So you are not alone in this.

Thumbs up

I wrote into this forum when Bogie was 7 years old because he decided to start to eat very little in his cage. I put all kinds of food and treats in his cage to get him to eat. He was loosing weight.

I got a response from a forum member who said that maybe Bogie wanted to eat with Vicki and me, like he would if he was in a flock. So, I put some of his food, plus treats, on a dish next to our dishes on the kitchen table. When we ate dinner, he flew down and ate his dinner. He ate a lot! He gained his weight back over the next month or so.

All that little guy wanted was to be a part of our physical family. He went through many interesting changes during the ages from 6 years to 9 years. From then on, he had that ' Flock Mentality ' and we became closer than ever before! He and I were really close.

Enjoy Oliver as much as you can! Give him extra kisses every day and treat him like a king! These parrotlets are remarkable parts of our human lives. One ounce of life has more influence on us than you think!

As you mentioned, they are flock animals and you are part of their flock. Hence they enjoy eating with us, on us, or even our food.

You have that right! I couldn't even open a food package or a pack of chips, etc., and Bogie or Ricochet would be right there!

I dearly love Oliver - - - - - - it's very reassuring for me to know that you experience the same thing. I will continue to do what makes him happy----my feeding him.

This makes the forum members so valuable and helpful to other members. Thanks guys!!!

Mine is the same way. She chirps happily whenever we are feeding her or we are eating with her. And, I notice that she eats a lot more too (like what Ozzie mentioned).

We were wondering what Bert was up to! He will be a year old the first week of June and the last 3 months He has really changed. He has to be in the kitchen anytime food is being prepared and likes to have us put samples out in his special corner of the counter, Some things he loves and some get the heave-ho to the floor. He will sit on the back of an empty dining chair while we eat or even get on my husbands shoulder and lean in for a bite. He can be really assertive actually helping himself to a plate! If he is in his cage he usually eats when we do.

Maybe just let him sot on your shoulder. They just love being on their humans.
