~~I Need To Know: Windows Ever Ruin Your Computer? ~~

Hi !

Microsoft Windows sent my computer an Update that devastated my laptop computer. It made it to where my computer would not go through the " Turn On " cycle! Normally, I would boot up and my HP logo showed up as usual, then my computer would click on to where I can see the Firefox Icon and I could go from there.

After the update, the HP would flash and my fan would speed up, then Crash! Then the HP would come back on and repeat the crash, over and over.

My wife got on her desktop and researched the problem. She found a statement from the troubleshooter that " Microsoft performed an update that has created problems for laptop users and Microsoft will Patch things up in a few days!"

Really? A few days? What if I needed this laptop for my business?

S, my wife was able to put my laptop in " Safe Mode " and I could , at least, do limited things. But all my extensive Bookmarks for Bogie's book and my extensive Contact list were...gone! All I had was info from 2019 in those files! I regularly back up my files, but I must have done something wrong and didn't back up the files correctly. But, Some file did back up but others didn't. I don't get it.

It is the Bogie's Bookmarks that was the killer. The bookmarks were in order and ready to print out for the final draft! Now, I have to reorganize again. I have the chapters, but I just created more work in putting the back back in order. Extra work for me!

I am trying to explain this to you, but you must understand, I do things differently than most people. I will be okay with the book, but the Update was so bad, my wife had to re-install Windows 10!

Windows would never tell us how to correct the problem. They goofed up, Vicki said. Vicki knows what to do and is very angry at Windows. She said, " Why do they keep Updating things all the time? " I agree. Every time they Update, we have laptop problems for some reason.

I don't understand everything that went on that was messed up, but I had to vent!

Thank God for Safe Mode! ( The F11 button on my laptop).

David

You should be able into safe mode the go to the installed programs section and uninstall the update.

That was the first thing Vicki tried. It was supposed to work, according to her ( and you). It didn't go as planned. My computer acted like it was hit with a virus when it updated. I am doing okay now, so far. It was the weirdest thing, especially when the laptop fan kept accelerating and slowing down, over and over.

Some things are different on this computer now.

Stay safe.

You can turn off or "pause" automatic updates on Windows 10 so that you can backup before you choose to install the update.

Yup...the exact same thing happened to us about 3 years ago. Had to eventually take the laptop in to be fixed because none of what Microsoft told us to do worked to fix it. Now we keep everything backed up on an external hard drive in case it ever happens again.

I hate those updates---especially since we have an older PC. I wish they'd give you the option to update or reject the update.

Sorry to hear it's happened to your PC, David. Here's hoping it gets better soon.

Thanks! Right now, it is like I have to start over learning things on this computer! There are a lot of things that have changed. Oh, well. I'll survive.

You can turn off automatic updates for Windows 7. I am not sure if you have an even older version of Windows.
