Ozzie3860 - Yes, it is common that parrotlets are protective of their mate, however this is not limited to parrotlets or birds in general. Many animals species have the same behavior regarding a mate.
It was cute to watch his protectiveness. Especially in light that she was the dominate bird and he was not but still he insisted on protecting and she mostly accepted it. It has been 7 years since his loss I am getting teary eyed just typing this. Amazing how strong their hold on our hearts are.
