Awww thank you David and Anya.

Reuben, the Rubino Bourke's parakeet came to me as a TWO WEEK old orphan! The lady who was breeding them had lost the mother bird (it died) and she was going into hospital - so of course she couldn't hand feed. She knew I had done a bunch of budgies from one day old, so she gave him to me. He is a very gentle, calm bird. It's the only one I trust not to bite anyone. My grandson handles him whenever he visits. I also recommend hand raised Bourkes as a first bird - NOT budgies! He has a very visible joy of flying ... and his wings make a VERY DIFFERENT sound in flight compared to budgies

Reuben is 8

Johnny, who LOVES water, started life as a yellow faced blue budgie. 2 years later, he got a suffusion of yellow feathers over the blue ones - so he looks green and yellow. I went into a pet store - ONLY to buy supplies .... and saw him and even drove off without him. BUT .... he was jumping up and down on the perch like the finches he could see.... so I went back and he joined the flock

He's not so friendly - he doesn't bite me ... but may bite others. He's the oldest - he's 14 and I expect he wont be with me much longer - his cere is turning brown and vet said he has testicular cancer. He's still a happy chap at present though

Jimmy is a funny bird. He is very vocal and loves to whistle and chirp. He generally won't bite. He is the young man in the budgie flock - he's 12. He HATES baths but likes misting

Why do you not recommend budgies as a first bird?

Budgies bite very hard ... and are moody lil gits - whereas a Bourke's parakeet is primarily a gentle bird.
