Safe tree to distract Lambeau from other plants?
I know this must have come up in the past but I searched the forum and didn't find anything, SO--have any of you had issues with your birb eating your coveted house plants?
After 5 years of not touching them, Lambeau is suddenly very interested in all of my house plants. I just got back from out of town and he has chewed on many! I have no idea whether he chewed on any that were poisonous, but he is very alive so I suppose he didn't eat enough if so (I have some that have conflicting data about their toxicity). I'd obviously like to prevent this in the future though. For now I am keeping all my plants out of his reach, but since he is flighted and out 24/7 this is tough and I hope not to always have to hide them. I assume he got bored but I also leave town about once a month and have never had this problem so I'm not sure why the sudden interest.
So my question is, if your birds did become interested in your plants were you able to distract them by getting a big safe plant that is "theirs"? I am hoping to get a tree or something he will want to hang out on so he will leave the others alone. If yes, what kind of trees were a win?
Thanks everyone! :)
Lambeau needs to look up these words on the world wide web.
" Trees Toxic To Birds " and " Plants Toxic to Birds "
There are huge lists to look at.
Sometimes when birds go looking for different things to do, it is because they are bored with the toys they have. Lambeau probably accidentally tasted a plant and found out that he liked the taste or he hated the taste and went searching for more plants/trees to examine.
There are many very toxic plants and trees to p'letts. The lists are long! It all depends on the area you live in . Florida has a lot of poisonous plants and trees.
I don't think that he may stay on a plant/tree that you designate as his because everything belongs to them - haha. Be careful that he does not eat the soil, unless you are using organic soil.
Here are 2 links to good lists for bird safe plants:
Jackie, That's funny! They do own everything!:D Insecticides and certain fertilizers are poisonous to birds, too!:(
I have lists of safe plants, I suppose my question is more about which ones you've found yours to especially like--is there a known parrotlet favorite? :) I was thinking a tree that allowed for good perching. Though I'm sure he will take no interest in his "designated tree" cause y'all are right--they own everything anyway
I will do some trial and error and report back lol. I closed the blinds to cover the windowsill which has all the plants in it for a couple days and he seems to have forgotten about them for now but...it's only a matter of time!
