Baby Parrotlet and time to train

Im getting a new baby handfed parrotlet in a couple of weeks. I was wondering when a youngster can start parrot training?

Also, where do you buy training props like basketball, bowling, skateboard, pegs, etc? The places I have found online want over $30.00 for basketball..Any places you can recommend?

You can start training whenever you want. With a baby, you want to start with basics such as step up and step down, etc. You should check out millet training, worked great with my guys.

To be honest, most of the props out there are for larger birds and are too big for the parrotlets. Most of the props that I have for my guys are toys that I find in the children's section of the stores (I found a miniature bowling set that way... though i have yet to teach my guys how to bowl) or for hamsters/ferrets. I have found some small enough for parrotlets, but it's rare. I suppose you can make some props yourself too if you're handy.

mine is 9 weeks..(Lucy) she steps up great even without the comand i still use it to reenforce it..she also does turnarounds great took a couple sesions 15min a piece..just started summersaults today she did 1 full the rest were 1/2..all with millet..i dont leave millet in cage only for training and to get her to come out of cage. and to stay on playpen...ive only had her for 4 days so with a little time and patience it can be done at any age..just dont force or rush it. if they arnt into it stop and just bond.. Im new to this site and have been reading lots of post about new owners wanting a fully trained and bonded bird over nite..that only happens with time...Lucy is doing great but im sure i will have to put her in check from time to time to show her who is boss..so good luck to you let me know how its going..

My little guy Charlie is the same age as Lucy..He is doing the exact same tricks, minus the summersault. Haven't tried that one yet. He also is beginning to talk, although at the moment it is jibberish but I can make out phrases that it sounds like he is attempting.. Smart little booogers!
