Hello, Parrotlet World!

Hi everyone! I adopted a four month old blue pied parrotlet last Friday. His name is Sky! This is my first time to take care of a parrotlet, and I could use all the help I could get.

We got him a huge cage, lots of chewable and shreddable toys and swings. He's doing great, but I noticed that he likes to bite my fingers, and he bites hard. I've read that it's probably because of my nail polish, so I'm going to get my nail polish taken out tomorrow and hopefully that stops him from biting.

Anyway, I'm off to read the threads now! Thanks for reading this!

Thumbs up

Greetings from California! I have a male and female that are just about 17 weeks old. I've had them for about 6 weeks now and they seem to be getting more comfortable with me. They won't allow me to touch them yet but have learned to step up. They are so much fun and very energetic. I gave them some fresh raw broccoli today and they literally mowed through it like little demons. It amazes me how much they can eat!! There's lots of good info on this site! I'm still pretty new myself so welcome aboard....

HI, welcome, I got my P'let, this past Nov, she is 2 years old and don't know her background, she doesn't bite, but is afraid of us..I do own 2 cockatiels since they were very young and when they were babies, they use to bite sometimes hard sometimes soft, they feel with their beaks to test things out, and they don't realize they are biting hard, like when you play with a young puppy...Good luck and will be glad to see some pictures..

Wow, how lucky for you to have a blue pied as your first p'let - they're rather rare where I'm from! I have a blue male, a green pied pair and a Spectacled Parrotlet pair as well as an Amazon.

Removing the nailpolish should help, but most young parrotlets go through a merciless biting phase as part of adolescence - most grow out of it, but some never do! Let us know how you make out, and remember that we love photos!

As far as biting goes, my Parrottlet, is 4 yrs. old and still bites. When they bite never pet there beak afterwards, you are rewarding them. When your finger gets bit tug downwards and say "GENTLE BEAK". This works well. When we say no it comes out in different tones, because it really does hurt. I found laughing only makes her do it more. They are smart. Be patient. Mine, greets me with bite every morning, because she is excited to see me. If I talk to her a few minutes before entering the cage it is much better.
