It's just darling! She is beautiful! I'm so envious that she lets you hold her - Bitsy isn't there yet. He loves to hang out and talk to us and fly around - but no holding!

Thanks! She is SO colorful. We had so much fun taking pictures and holding her. She doesn't mind at all. I gave her little head kisses afterwards.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v492/Sally11/tinygirl.jpg

Is Chipper a girl???
I thought females dont have coloring on thier rumps?:)

They usually don't. She is a girl. I have read that once in a while they have some color there. She is a little girl, no color on the wings and less on the head that a boy.

Is she a pacific??

Yep. I even have a few hens that have some bluish tints above their eyes :) Nothing like the males, but most females don't show coloring like that.

Then... how do I know if Kiwi is actually a boy... not a girl. Is there anything besides coloring that identifies them??

The males markings are DEEP violet blue on the rump, in the flight feathers and above the eyes. I am almost positive I have seen pics of Kiwi's rump as violet blue.

I copied this from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parrotlet
[Parrotlets are sexually dimorphic, meaning males can be distinguished from females. Males have markings of cobalt blue on their head, wings and tail. Females generally lack these blue markings.]

Males have blue feathers on the wings. Chipper doesn't have that. Her rump is so very pretty though. Yes, Chipper is a Pacific. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v492/Sally11/PICT0661400.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v492/Sally11/PICT1007landing.jpg

Thanks Marjet. We have had a great time making her healthy and happy and seeing the results!
Great Photo Sally - really shows Chipper's colors.
I believe Chipper is a Lucida - the Lucida is a sub species of the Pacific Parrotlet - You can read about them here - http://www.parrotletranch.com/thelostlucida.html
Note: These are true Pacifics not mutations or hybrids.
My Female has the same coloring - I got her from the Parrotlet Ranch and was told by Sandee she is a Lucida.

I have done lots of reading and talked with a breeder. The Lucida has a grey wash of color. I have seen photos. Very grey. So, all I know is that I did read about a breeder with a couple of Pacific females with some blue on the back.
Also, Chipper has no blue on her wings at all. Who knows for sure. I just think it is pretty.
Pado, does your female have blue on the wings? The photos I have seen look nothing like Chipper. I have seen so much on the internet.
Pacific Lucida Parrotlet
(Forpus coelestis lucida)
This variation has most of the same characteristics and colors as the Pacific Parrotlet except as noted: although mainly green, Lucida males and females both have blue color on their wings and rump. The males' blue coloring on the rump is dark cobalt blue and the blue markings around the eye are darker than the female, which is similar to a male Pacific (normal-colored). Also, both male and female have a gray wash over the green coloring on the wings. Note: This variation is not recognized in all reference materials

I guess they all differ a bit.http://www.parrotletalliance.org/images/Lucida-Elmo4-3-03.jpg

From what I was told by Sandee Molenda- The Lucida Male has the grey wash over their body and only about 30% of the Lucida Females have some blue on the wing.
After contacting purchasers of our birds’ offspring, a majority consisting of seventy percent, stated their hens had blue rumps. Of those thirty percent stated the females also had limited blue on their wings as well.
There is one subspecies, the Lucida Pacific parrotlet (Forpus coelestis lucida) where the females have blue rumps and eye streaks and, sometimes, wings although it is not as dark blue as the males. Males of this subspecies have silver gray backs and wings as well an eye streak that completely encircles the back of the head. This subspecies is found in Columbia. You can learn more about the lucida Pacific subspecies by reading our article entitled "The Lost Lucida <thelostlucida.html>".
My female had the turquoise rump which runs the length of her body under her wings when I got her - but from her first molt (which she is still going through) she is getting it a bit deeper in color - she is also getting her eye streaks which she didn't have when I first got her, they are faint but apparently will get more pronounced as she molts - she has no blue on her wings. She's a tiny little thing but that has nothing to do with the Lucida, she's just dainty :p
I've seen some other females with some turquoise on their rumps - But its Chippers eye streaks that lend me to belive she could be Lucida.
I find it all fascinating
:)

Nice - ... now my male has that grey wash over his body - my female is a much deeper green than the male.
Sally Like you said sounds like they vary a lot and all are different - Some of the Lucida's have some light blue feathers on their chests. :) That would be nice to see.

It is all very interesting for sure. Thank you. I have read a lot but never saw a bird without the gray. I guess they are all males. Well, now I am confused, ha!
