I wanted to see what everyone thought could have happened. He was about 8 months old, was molting and just got some flight feathers. He acted completely fine, was actually more energetic than usual yesterday evening. He was flying all over the place, chirping, and ate well yesterday. I have one of those little nests made of fabric for him but he hasnt used it in a while. In the morning when I woke up he was in there and didnt come out. He used to do this when he was younger so I didnt really think anything of it. I just got home from work and he had died in the little nest. What could have happened? I feel terrible, I definetly would have taken him to the vet if I had realized anything was wrong, it was soooo sudden. I keep my apartment cool, its around 60, could that be a factor? thanks for all the advice.

That is heartbreaking-- do you have a picture of the nest?
Maybe he got tangled in a thread and suffocated or panicked?

I live in NY as well and try to keep my apartment in the 60's
so I don't think that would do it.

I'm sorry for your loss. Sometimes these little ones don't act sick but really are.
Maybe you could talk to the breeder you bought him from....

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your little one. You must be devastated.

There are so many things that could have happened, it will be hard for us to offer you any answers - strangling as was previously suggested and exposure to chemical fumes are two that come to mind first. If you still have his little body and it hasn't been frozen you can ask your avian vet to do a necropsy to find out exactly what happened.

Fly free little one - you were certainly well loved in the short time you were here.

So sorry to hear about this! Our thoughts are with you in this sad time.

We keep our house cool at night too, and my birds do fine, so don't think that was the problem.

When bird are ill most of the time, it is hard to tell until they are very ill, that is for survival, in the wild, they don't want their prey to know they are ill, and other birds that will pick on them, so they can't show weekness.. It was most likely nothing that you did , 60 is fine, not cold..He could have been hatched with a defect, or picked up some bacteria before you even got him, that is what they tell people to keep their new birds away from the others for 30 days..I feel so bad for you, what a horrible thing to come home to..hugs to you, and don't blame yourlself..It was not your fault..

Its just so sad because I have been trying so hard to make sure I did everything right and I had only had him for about 6 months. This isnt the exact "nest" but it is very similar. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751033
I couldnt find anything wrong with it, but who knows. Thanks for all the good advice though, he was just so much fun and a joy.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. At least for his short little life, he was well loved. I would second possible fume/gas exposure. Maybe CO? I've heard about a flock of 4 birds that passed away recently and they suspected that... as cold as it has been and houses closed up, you hear about CO poisoning a lot. It takes very little to affect these guys so you may not be showing any symptoms. You might want to get a CO detector to make sure your place is fine too... I heard about a whole apartment being affected too and everybody had to go to the hospital- nobody in the building had a CO detector either...

I keep Chipper covered at night and the house is cool not cold summer and winter. It is hard to say what happened. So many things can happen to them. Illness, cold, fumes....I am so sorry!

So sorry to hear of your loss. I know how badly you feel firsthand having recently lost my beloved Sadie. They are such sensitive little beings, it is hard to guess what went wrong.

So Sorry for your loss:( I sure hope you can pinpoint what happened to your beloved bird. The nest looks safe. Sounds like you loved your little feathered one very much, and it would be helpful to know if there might have been something in the air, water, food etc. in case you plan to get another one in the future. I know you could never replace the one you had, but it sounds like you are a good owner who does their best to provide a happy home.
