I just opened a bag of seeds and a moth flew out. This is the second bag, diffrent brand, different store. Both bags were sealed with good expiration dates. What is causing this and is it harmful? I've read about freezing the seed and some websites say it destroys the vitamins. This is really creeping me out. Any thoughts and ideas would be appreciated.

It is gross to have moths fly out of the seed bag, but the good news is, its not harmful to the birds. I always freeze a new bag of seed for 24-48 hours before opening it. This will kill any eggs/moths before they get out and into the house. I dont think freezing for just a day or two will destroy anything positive in the seed. You might want to do that from now on, before opening the bags. Always works for me. :)

yep I had to start freezing all of my bags, like you it didn't matter what store I bought it from.

Don't forget to call the manufacturer and request your money back

Me too. I freeze their food, pellets, treats, whatever, for a couple of days when I bring it home. I've never had a moth or bug problem in their food.

Volkman Avian Super Science Parrotlet diet seed mix recommends refrigeration after opening, but I have not had any problems keeping it at room temp.

I would not freeze the seed if I was you, alters texture and who knows what else.
