Peanut has a broken arm :-(

We had left to go to get some cash out so my hubby could take the bus rather then drive to a job interview, and he put peanut up in her new cage not knowing i had opened her side doors as well as her front, and when we got home I didnt even look and let the dogs out of the bedroom were they stay when we are gone, and the puppy picked her up... I cried the whole way to the vet i thought she was going to die.... She is pretty mad about the cone. Her humerus is what is broken.

I feel like such a horrible bird mom....

No, you aren't a bad mom. It was an accident, and it was no bodies fault. I'm glad Peanut is okay though. You'll now have to shower Peanut with attention, treats, and cuddles!

You're a fine mom and from now on you will know to check the location of the bird before continuing your activities ;) :D . By the way, from my recent exeriences with Sparky, I've discovered that these little birds can take a heck of a lot of battle damage... . When I'm up for it, I'll share how Sparky almost died this weekend (I'll do that in the Sparky thread though).

By the way, we need more pictures - that get-up is great!!:D :D

How long did the vet say it would take to heal?

Pado,

This is what I was worried might happen with your bird/dog interactions.

Regards,

Art S.

Good luck! :) As long as Peanut has her spunkiness, she'll be fine!

We have been considering getting one of those collars for Sparky in order to fight the plucking but our vet has not been in favor of it.

Art S.

I agree with everyone else. You are not a bad bird mom. Accidents happenk, it's not like you did anything on purpose. You took little Peanut to the vet right away. I can tell you were very worried. I hope Peanut heals quickly. Keep us posted.

jupiter11600 - So sorry to hear about Peanut - poor little Peanut. But don't beat yourself (or your husband) up - as everyone is saying accidents happen and they are learning experiences - I've done the very same thing with leaving the side (breeder door) in the cage open and the birds are right back out - we're human and make mistakes like that. You got him medical attention and I'm sure he will be fine. Keep us all posted on how he progresses.

Art - Not to worry about my dog and the birds. Hanks a senior dog and I've had birds his entire life, he's grown up with them. I had a canary once that would walk all over him while he way laying down - they had a seven year relationship :p - I know he wouldn't ever harm the birds - plus he never gives them a chance he knows to move :) ( Although I intervene and don't let them harass him - but they usually manage to slip in one or two attempts every now and again) :D

Update on peanut:
I have started putting a little birdy leisure suit on her, She's all tricked out now!!! Pink with hearts or green with clovers but so far it keeps the cone off her!!! She just was so depressed!

I also started spoon feeding her some harrisons mash. Most of this is just thrown all over as she seems to like to pick it up, then shake her head to throw it! But she seems to be a little perkier so she should be getting some. It's the high potency as that's what I have for my finch and it does say when recovering from injury or illness!!

She has to go in for new xrays in a few weeks, So hopefully things look better then!!

The new rule around here is when peanut is out, only ONE of her doors can be open (Out of 5!)

This morning I cooked up some pasta, rice, goldenfeast, and a bean soup mix (Nothing but beans n a few veggies, you add everything else) and she is actualy eating what i cooked! Woo hoo!

Elyse
