Hi!
My parrotlet has crusty eyes most of the time. I have taken her to an avian vet who tried a couple of medicines and also had me spray her frequently. Nothing has made a difference and the vet is truly baffled. This has been going on since before I bought her. A couple of times a week, I have to gently wipe her eyes with a warm cotton ball to remove the crust or else her eyes will start to close up. I am now on a mission to find out if it is something missing in her diet or?? Please help if you have any knowledge of this type a thing. Oh and she is also missing feathers on the sides of her head so the vet thougtht maybe she was rubbing herself but I have seen no signs of that.Thank you!!

Has your vet checked for blocked tear ducts in your parrotlet's eyes? I have a youngster who had a problem with that and the feathering always seemed to have a crust around it. Does it also appear that the area right around the eyes is a bit swollen?

What did you do for the problem with the tear ducts?

My avian vet gave me some medication (tobramycin optic) to put in the damaged right eye and the right nostril twice/day. I used it for a month and then stopped it on her instructions. While it seemed to aggravate the eye even more, once I stopped, the eye isn't weeping as much and the condition seems to be clearing itself.

In larger parrots, the duct can be opened I believe surgically.
