Why do people think it's such a big, bad thing to get a bird as a baby? Oscar is the first baby I hand-fed starting at 3 weeks, and it wasn't hard at all.
I know a lot of people that sell the bird before it's weaned, so they can grow their bond easily.
Is it risky or something??
Yes, its risky - search the internet and you will find some horrific stories.

Nick - here is a site with some dangers with inexperienced people hand feeding.

Well I did a lot of research and talked to a lot of people and learned how to prevent those problems. Oscar never showed any signs of any sickness, etc.
Also, I helped the breeder sell some parrotlets one time, at 5 weeks old, and a lady bought two, and never had a problem, even though she was inexperienced.

Nick, didn't you tell us that Oscars sister died of dehydration??
THIS is why it's not a good idea to get unweaned babies.. needless death.. what a shame....
when oscar was about 2-3 months old, I got another baby parrotlet, which was a month old. I put it with oscar, and sometimes oscar would be nice, and sometimes mean. Then a few days later, I saw oscar up on the food bowl, with the baby right next to him! And oscar was feeding it!!
So I thought it was mothering it.....
but then oscar was mean again.....
so I seperated them....
a few days later, the baby died .

That wasn't Oscar's sister. It was a green from another clutch.
BUT I just found out it came from the parent's first clutch. Which usually is a disaster clutch. But they all died soon after. So it wasn't me.
I just don't see your point here nick - inexperienced people should not take on a life altering task such as hand feeding a baby bird unless its absolutely necessary and there is no other option and the bird would die otherwise - but this is not what we're discussing here.
Responsible breeders who care for their birds wellbeing should not ever put a birds life at risk by giving it to a person who does not have extensive knowledge of how to properly feed that bird.
Yes, it can go okay but its not worth the risk - its a coin toss - and on the other side of the coin there is a life at stake.

That's true. But my mom is also a breeder. And she taught me how to feed him. Oscar was the first bird I ever hand fed, but not my mom's.
So the owner wasn't irresponsible, because my mom is an experienced breeder.
About the baby that died, it wasn't my fault or anybody's. It was obviously due to the fact that it was because it was the parents first clutch, since all 4 babies died, within a short period of time. And some of them were still in the breeder's care.

OMG.... I can't believe YOU.
It was of course your fault that that baby died. YOU took it from the breeder at 4 weeks old, put it in a cage with an unrelated older bird, and expected it to survive??? Then it died of dehydration?? Because YOU didn't hand feed it properly.
I know you said you get all your birds for free, from a breeder.. Ya, a real good one.. So maybe you looked at it like "oh well" it was FREE.
Also, 1st clutches don't have to be disastrous.. as you said.. unless the breeder doesn't know what the heck they are doing.
I am so upset that I'm done with this forum. It used to be fun, now it isn't so.
I hope people read, research, and LOVE their pets... like most everyone on here does.. so they don't end up spewing ignorant comments.
Peace out.

Okay. I don't seem to believe you have a veterinarian's license. Therefore, everything you say is your own personal beliefs, as are my comments.
It wasn't in the cage full time.
I'm not the one who handfed it anyways, my mom did. So I don't know who you think you are marking my comments as ignorant, and believing that I would think: "its free, oh well."
Also, by saying the first clutch isn't always disastrous....I don't think catfish is a bad owner. She seems like a good, responsible owner. This is from one of her posts:
Well, I've got good news and bad news. This the greens' first clutch, which seem to always be a disaster. The first hatchling didn't survive. She is going to candle the remaining eggs Thursday to see if there are any fertile eggs. http://talkparrotlets.com/showthread.php?p=6616&highlight=first+clutch#post6616
You don't know HOW I handfed it, properly or not.
And what makes you think I don't research, learn about, and love my pets?
I'm a contributing member of this forum. Asking for help and advice. I also have another bird that is 9 years old, and he hasn't died. And two 7 year old dogs, and a cat. I'm pretty sure I'm doing something right here.
So thank you for your ideas, but no thanks, because you are being very disrespectful for no apparent reason.
Nick - as I stated before I don't see your point or what you are defending it makes no sense to me and so I am also done with this topic.
Angel PLEASE don't leave this site we need people with your experience here.

I'm not defending anything! She started the angriness, and disrespect. That's what i'm defending.
There are many points in my post.
-She doesn't know everything
-I didnt kill the bird
-I have probably just as much experience as she does.
You guys are nice people. I don't know why you have to get so angry just because things I say, about how I feel, and what I think. I never would have thought you guys would attack me for no reason.

Folks, I joined this forum due to mutual respect. I was a visitor with another forum and two members were going at it so bad that I left and won't go back. I just hope that concerns can be addressed without escalating. I understand that getting an unweaned Parrotlet opens a lot of questions/concerns but please let's address the issues calmly and let everyone learn the good/bad/indifferent. Everyone's help is so helpful and valuable, let's just address it in a calmer fashion. This is a great forum

Yes, sometimes on different forums people get upset. I know it is because they are concerned about the birds. We have to remember that respecting each other will keep members together, where we can all keep learning! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v492/Sally11/AGGIE.jpg

Sally -- Chipper is quote the model! She is a beauty. I agree with your note. We love our birds so much and want the very best for them that we get quite passionate when we respond to postings. that is human nature so hopefully we can channel all that energy towards supplying info and helping people through an issue while others benefit from the info. I have to get some pics of Kiwi as my signature.
