Away from drafts and heating vents/sources what would be the correct indoor tempature?

Generally, our birds are comfortable when we're comfortable. If you need to wear a sweater indoors, it's probably too chilly. If you're worried, you can get a heated perch made especially for birds - I believe there is one brand recommended more than the others, so hopefully someone who has one will chime in here soon. You can also add a fleece snuggle ring or snuggle buddy for them to cuddle into.

Just talked to the vet about this. You don't want big variations in the tempurature.
Like this summer I would take him out on the screened porch where it was in the 80's and then back into the air conditioned house. Vet didn't think that was a good idea.
So if you keep the house at 78 during the day and 65 at night that would not be good. I think the heated perch might be a good idea and think I might get one.

Birds lose a lot of heat through their feet and most like heated perches. Just make sure you get a Thermo Perch, as that's the only one that is made for and safe for birds.

I keep my house at 80F year round and that seems to work for everyone. :)

These birds have been domesticated for some time, so as was previously posted, if you are comfortable they are comfortable.

Birds have delicate respiratory systems and so dramatic variations in temp are not good. Steer your bird clear of drafts. This includes warm sunny windows that may seep cold air in the night.

Make sure that your bird has places in their cage to be warm and places to be cool. They will do the rest with their feather coats. The heated perches for homes in the chilly north are not a bad idea.

What about one of those full-spectrum heat lamps, like people use for reptiles? Would that be good? I was thinking of getting a full-spectrum light for my bird anyway; is there any reason why a heat lamp would be bad (I wouldn't leave it on all day - maybe a dose in the morning and evening so she wouldn't cook)?

A heat lamp sounds a bit scary to me. Have you checked out the Avitech heated panel? Safe and can be used 24/7 if needed.

With cold weather approaching, what would be the minimum temptature (away from drafts and heat sources)? This is my first plet and he's about 5 months old. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I have ordered a Thermo Perch from Foster and Smith.

Jpack, as has been addressed in your other post, there is no absolute minimum temperature guideline - they are acclimated just as we are. If you are cool enough in your house that you need to put a sweatshirt on, it's too cool for your bird - you should be comfortable in a thin, long-sleeved t-shirt and he will be comfortable as well. The thermo-perch was a great idea, well done!

I have merged this thread with your previous one so that if anyone else searches the forums with a similar question, it will pop up right away.

Another vote for the avitech heat panels. They are wonderful...soft, even, safe heat that they can snuggle up to, or move away from, as they feel they need it. Highly recommend attaching one of these to the cage!

Gave Jose a bath yesterday- he has a thermo perch; he has not warmed up to the idea of it being in his cage yet, so has not used it much. He did sit on it for a few minuets after the bath- I placed him on it. But after he dried a bit- he then went to his tent to finish drying, he finds comfort there, the thermo perch is directly under the tent, I think the heat rises, though I understand there is little heat givn off, but perhaps just enough to keep him warm. I do think at night since I cover his cage with a rather thick blanket this thermo perch, though he does not sit directly on it and it is deirctly under his tent , it does give him some warmth. I am happy I got it for him even though he does not seem to get alot of direct use out of it yet.

I'm interested in these panels. Could you show us how you have yours mounted for Bodie? Is it on a wall or the cage? Thanks.

I have it mounted on his cage. They do include the stuff to do a wall mount.
