Donny's cage has the little slide up access doors for his food and water bowls. When I had a conure many years ago, my conure was able to lift the doors and get out of his cage. I used to put some type of clip on the doors so he wouldn't be able to do that. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to do that on Donny's cage. Do any of you have parrotlets that have figured out how to get out of their cages on their own?

well none of mine have yet, touch wood, but i think others have.
the doors are fairly simple, and its always better to be safe than sorry

I had to lock their doors with twisty ties bcuz they figured out how to push them open (at least on their travel cage). the bigger cage has a fairly complicated mechanism that they haven't figured out yet.........

My bird is in a flight cage now but on his previous cage he figured out how to open the sliding doors... he just hadn't figured out how to hold it open and escape yet... then i move him... secure the doors!!...lol

I would avoid using twistie-ties if I were you. Parrotlets are consumate nibblers and can nibble the plastic coating off of the ties. Some of the ties, made in China, have been shown to have lead in the plastic and lord knows what the metal part is.

Budgies have no problem figuring out how to get out of sliding door cages, the small doors over water and food cups--so you can bet your parrotlet will figure it out eventually. Go to Home Depot (or Lowes, or Ace, whatever) and get some metal spring clips. They work wonderfully and look good as well.

I found these (http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardware-Hardware-Fasteners-Chain-Rope/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xlwZar80/R-100174407/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053) ones to work well.

thanks for pointing that out- luckily they haven't had to go anywhere in their travel cage where the ties are, so they haven't had any access in quite a while, but I've already changed them......good advice!

Thanks for that link! I went to home depot today and got some of those clips and they work like a charm. He hasn't tried getting out but better safe than sorry.

Both of my parrotlets are escape artists. I watched one day and Sprout kept going under the food dish with seeds in and pushing up enought to wiggle his way out.

My little Sweetums will spend several minute lifting the little feeder doors open and then slamming them shut again just to hear the sound it makes I guess. So he knows he can open them, he just never gets around to going through them. If I leave the main door open and leave the room, he stays in his cage until I come back. I guess he likes it in his cage, all is stuff is there after all. Go figure!
