I have been thinking about building a cage for my future parrotlet, and have been pondering what to use. The appropriate wire seems hard to find, so I was wondering if plastic egg-crate (used in ceiling panels...also callled a light-difuser) would be a suitable substitute for wire. It is very hard plastic. I am sure large parrots could break it, but I don't know if a parrotlet could. What do you think? Here is a pic of the stuff in case you aren't sure what I mean.

I'm thinking so! They have powerful little beaks!! I'm sure other's will be able to 'shed some light' on this for you, too.:) Better to be safe than sorry....

I'll bet they could break it! They may be small, but they are feisty and their beaks can be fierce! How about an HQ flight cage instead???? LOL!

Wondering where you would put the food and water cups. The squares might be hard to keep clean.

That's a really interesting idea. If you decide to give it a try, post a picture of the finished cage later :)

I would just buy a cage. If these little birds can chew trough their perches that plastic won't last long. Besides I would find it difficult to watch my bird thru that .

Even if they couldn't get through it, I would be concerned that they could bite off little pieces. They sure do a lot of chewing...Also, the plastic might degrade over time...maybe look for a used bird cage, just to be certain?

Well, after looking into it more I see you're all right, and I should just buy a cage...building one that's safe and secure. with all the right doors, etc... sounds like it'd be a pain in the a...nyway where can one find these HQ cages in Canada? I've searched and can't find any distributors. Shipping one from the links posted is expensive.

We got our HQ from Parrotdise Perch in Toronto! They buy them by them in bulk for special orders and also (I believe) carry them in store.

Thanks so much! Is that about the price one can expect for these cages throughout Canada? It's the best cage I've seen so far in terms of size for the buck, that's for sure, gotta love the fact it comes in different colours too! Mine'll be green.

I also learned of a caged bird expo coming up in Richmond Hill, will there be cages for sale there?
