what are the odds of a pair breeding, and not successfully fertilizing?

Well, It's a gamble for sure! You just have to take the "wait and see" approach. My pair had eggs for the first time last April, 4 out of 5 hatched, and one was not fertile. It was egg #4.
Part of the fun in having the eggs is waiting to see if they hatch! Good luck!
