Hello everyone~ My name is Joyce, and today I received what I believe is a hand-fed Pacific Blue Parrotlet as a present. It was bought from a pet store close to my neighborhood.

I know I should be letting it explore its cage at this time, so I've been doing idle research on how to care for them and train them since the bird came home, and I stumbled on this website. I am joining in hopes of learning to be a good owner :)

The bird seems to be well familiar with its cage already, but it's climbing all over the place now and chirping often. Is this an okay sign, or is it afraid still?

I'll keep to this since I know there are more appropriate sections of the forum to post questions. Ta ta!

Joyce,

Welcome aboard and congratulations on your new bird!

To me your bird sounds fine, they are normally quiet and stationary when scared.

Spend some time reading the various threads and feel free to ask questions and add comments. We, as a group, are all gaining from each other's experiences.

By the way, what have you decided to name your bird?

Regards,

Art S.

Welcome to the site Joyce and to the world of Parrotlets :)

I agree that its a good sign your P'let is moving about his cage. As Art said he would be quiet and still if he was scaired or uncomfortable.

Sounds like you are off to a good start. If you go up to the cage bars and talk to him softly and he comes over to you, he's ready for you two to be pals ;)

Welcome Joyce. Tommaso was 8 wks old when I got him and he was quiet for the first few hours, then he started getting familiar with his cage and chirping.
I started taking him out of his cage after 24 hours. He seemed to like being around me and eventually, he always wanted out. He is now 18 months old and has been such a great member to our family.
Like Pado and ArtS says, he seems to be acting normal. Do what you are doing talking softly getting your Parrotlet used to your voice.
Have fun with your new Parrotlet. What a nice present.:) They are great birds.

Thanks a lot you guys :)

The person who bought it forgot to ask how old is our parrotlet, but I can always go back and ask personally. So far the name appears to be Jack. Today it seemed pretty social; we took him out and he was sitting on everyone's finger and he seems to have taken comfort on my shoulder right now. :)

I think some of the things I'd like to concentrate after Jack is comfortable is his pooping problem and occasionally he bites.

Morena: Is Tommaso on YouTube? Because I think I saw a video

Jack's a GREAT name ! - I'd stick with that :) Sounds like you got yourself a nice hand raised one (not all are, and a lot of them take weeks to months to settle into their new home) Sounds like Jack has made himself right at home :D

They need to poop every 10 minutes or so - they can't control this. So its up to the owner to put them into a "pooping" appropriate place every 10 minutes. When you put them down and they do poop make a big fuss when they do it - this is how you train them to go every time you put them down and they usually catch onto this pretty quickly. Maybe a bit longer for a very young one.

Biting takes more work - people will post more or search through the site and you'll see lots of postings on this - it seems to be a Parrotlets favorite naughty thing to do

Joyce, I'm glad Jack is making good progress. Can't wait to hear more of Jack's progress. Also, can't wait to see pictures. Yes you are correct, Tommaso is on the youtube. It's titled "Tommaso's Spa Day". He loves to have scritches. My husband is giving him the scritches while I was video taping him. The music in the back ground went with the spa theme. :) I copied the link below. Is this the one you saw?

My parrotlets that bite the least are also given the most "control" I do whatever I possibly can to stay a step ahead of them making them think they are making their own choices when essentially I have set them up to choose what I want them to choose :)
