Our little baby isn't feeling well at the moment...we noticed on Sunday morning that she wasn't perky and ready to wake up the way she normally is, her "beep" sounded a little off, and her droppings were a little watery (just like Wishingbee's Rex, which at first made me wonder if I was seeing things that weren't there because they were at the forefront of my mind). We called the on-call avian vet and were told to moniter her since she was, when we called, bright, active, and eating.
Monday morning she was perfectly perky, but later in the afternoon she was fluffy and sleepy while on our fingers (she never ever gets sleepy while she's on us) so we rushed her to the vet. Even though our home digital scale showed no change in her weight, the vet's scale showed a 3 gram loss since her initial birdie visit, and they did a stool sample which showed only a trace of bad bacteria, not an alarming amount. While we were there, though, she slept on my shoulder and was very quiet...
After discussing our options, we decided to do a round of antibiotics in case it's a bacterial infection. The vet did not think, with her weight at 25 grams and the fact that she was quiet, that taking blood at that time was a good idea.
The only other thing we could think of was that she had her first taste of walnut on Saturday, loved it, and ate more walnut on Monday. The vet suggested there might have been mould on it that had left some toxins in her system that were working their way out, which seemed reasonable.
We were able to take her home since she's eating voraciously, dosing her with meds twice a day, making sure she gets lots of sleep, and keeping a close eye on our little baby.
It's so alarming when they get sick...they're so tiny...but we have a great vet, so we're hoping that she will have a quick recovery :)
