We were having a heat wave here last week and installed our a/c. What we wanted to know is what is a safe temperature range for Parrotlets?

Our apartment can get extremely hot in the summer. We have seen it go over 100F in the past. We got the a/c (before we had Bart), because we had to replace a lot of our electronics due to heat and humidity damage. It was cheaper to get the a/c than replacing computers, TV's, DVD players, etc. every summer. I do not want to replace Bart, if you know what I mean.

So, what would you say would be the hottest temperature that would be safe for Bart? Right now, just to be on the safe side, I am basing it on; if I'm not comfortable, then Bart is not comfortable.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you.

I think they can take more heat than cold. Mine sits in the window with the sun shining on him. When I use the air conditioning I pull his cage away from the vent so it isn't blowing on him.
I would think cold air blowing them a long time would not be good. Try googling temperatures and birds.

My guys can take temps up to 90 degrees F safely, though our heat waves come periodically and I make sure that there's good airflow. the humidity is what is really the killer, we had some bad high temps with high humidity, I got worried and pulled them to the laundry room which was cooler. As for the coolest, my guys have been able to handle temps as low as 45F (though usually I try to make sure that it's warmer than that! and there's no cold breezes and I try to make sure it's not for long periods of time). These little guys are a lot hardier than people expect:)

As a side note. I also just got an a/c for the bird room because it gets so much sun and heat in the summer and I worried about the humidity and high temps that we can get. Did you do any research to see if the a/c was bird safe? any teflon? I tried looking up some info, but couldn't find anything really... lots of stuff about space heaters and which ones are the safest with birds. I got a Sharp portable a/c, so I plan to call them this coming week before actually using it to make sure that there shouldn't be anything in it that may harm the birds.

The only research I found on a/c was that it was ok during heat waves and as long as the a/c is not blowing on your pet bird. We have a Goldstar and it cools by passing inside air over some sort of metal disk. All the mechanical parts are on the other side that is on the outside of the window. So, the unit doesn't draw air in from the outside. The a/c is small so It doesn't fill the spot that the original window screen was in. So, what I did was make a smaller screen to fit beside the a/c and I can slide the glass windows open and closed. That way we can have air flow when we are not using the a/c. The a/c blows air from the top not the front and Bart is nowhere near that area in our living room.

I know our apartment gets over 90F in the summer. This started back about 6 or 8 years ago when the city decided to cut down two big trees in front of our building. We live in a 2 story, 4 apartment unit. We are on the top floor, south side of the building and we get the sun most of the day. The back yard is full of trees so the bedroom stays a little cooler.

I did find somethings about temp range, like up to 90F or a little more with moving air. But, I guess I will just keep an eye on Bart. If it is getting too hot and he shows signs of stress, I'll move him to a cooler location in the apartment or put on the a/c.

Thanks again.

Try emailing Dr. Burkett from the Birdie Boutique. He is the avian vet there and owns the store called The Birdie Boutique. I always email him from time to time. He know's his stuff. He usually answers in a timely fashion.

I go by the same rule of thumb that you are using - if I'm not comfortable, they probably aren't either, whether it's too hot OR too cold from the A/C.

i think you must remembe the birds come from a hot part of the world Peru, and central america plus the Amazon so long as your birds are NOT in direct sun and have plenty of fresh water i would think the would cope with the temps you wrote about after all they are kept in all of the States of the USA you could give them a gantal eletric fan on the hottest days

Thank you everyone for your help.

Bodie, thanks for the link, I will check it out.

Alexander, I did think about what you said, but I am looking at this from the angle that Bart is not wild. Bart has been through 10 years + of good old Canadian weather. As Canadians and our close US neighbors know, we get extreme weather from frigid cold winters to sweltering hot/humid summers that are not constant year to year. We have had Bart for about 2 years. Before Bart lived at my parents, who's house doesn't get as hot as our apartment. Last summer was not to bad, but with this year's early heat wave, I think we are in for a hot/humid summer.

I am concerned about when we are not at home. We don't leave fans or a/c running when we are out. My parents use to own a Fire & Flood Restoration company and I have seen way too many homes destroyed by fire caused by fans and/or a/c running when no one was home. I won't chance it. With all windows open in the summer the temp. in here can get way to hot.

We have decided when we are away for the day or sometimes we are away for about a day an a half, we will move Bart to the back bedroom as it seems to stay a little cooler then the rest of the apartment (good tree coverage in backyard). And yes, we make sure there is a lot of water and food in his cage.

Thanks again for everyone's input.
