View Full Version : Greenish Poop--Worried about Darcy

When I was cleaning Darcy's cage this morning I noticed that his poop has a green tinge too it. Not really green, just a little bit "greenish." It is normal consistency and the normal amount too. I know change in bird poop can be a sign of illness, so I'm a little concerned. Also, last night I came home around 10pm after being out all day (work, school, etc) and I expected to him to be asleep in his usual spot. Instead, he was sitting on his lower perch near his food dish. After I approached, he gave me a dirty look, like "hey! why are you waking me up!" and then went to his normal spot at the back of his cage near the top.
So, the sleeping in a funny place and the greenish-poop have made me worried. However, he is acting perfectly fine today. Eating, playing, climbing all over the inside and outside of his cage. No fluffed up feathers or other sick bird signs.
So, am I over-reacting? I'm kind of thinking he was angry at me and my roommate for being out of the apartment all day and was lonely. Also, I he has been eating mostly his seed/pellet mix this past week as I have not had time to make him a new batch of fresh mash.

It's always hard to know if they're sick or not! It doesn't hurt to have a vet check him out to make sure that they're healthy or sick. I know I spent days looking at my tiel, thinking that there's something off about her but I couldn't figure out what was wrong! It eventually hit me that her voice was just a bit off, nothing else! Brought her to the vet right away and found out she had an infection, cleared right up with antibiotics and some nasal flushing that they did. Thankfully my p'lets haven't had any issues :)
I hope Darcy isn't sick. Good luck :)

Could be something, could be nothing. Has Darcy been eating anything unusual in the past few days? Is it just the solid droppings that are tinted green, or the urates and liquid as well?

Here's a picture. (I feel totally weird for taking a posting a picture of my bird's poop...)

I hate to over-react and take him to the vet, since I'm very tight on money, but if I have to I will of course, work it out.
:( Poor little guy. He has been acting normal today. I just feel guilty and like a bad bird mom! I've been so busy with school and work that I haven't been home as much lately and neither of us has been eating very well. I am also leaving in two weeks for two months for a summer research program in Maine (I live in CA). Darcy will be staying with my parents and sister who love him and will take great care of him, but I feel like I'm abandoning my baby!

I can't really tell what the pic is showing, it's too small. Is he still having weird poops or are they normal now?

They're about the same. Though I think I might have figured out why. He has a new toy with bright green strips of crinkle paper sticking out of a wicker ball and he's been shredding them and pulling them out like mad. I think it might be some green dye. I'll take the toy out and see what happens.
I think this might be a better picture. It's some poops clumped together from under his sleeping spot. There is also some kay-kob in there which is in the bottom of his cage.

To me, it looks normal. Jack always has a greenish tinge to his poop, but he also eats a lot of fresh veggies, and fresh food gives birds slightly green and softer poo :D

I agree with Skthurley and ParrotletsRock. Bart has been in our family for 10 years (2 years with me) and I would be worried if I saw that Bart's poop didn't have a green tinge to it. It maybe the new toy, remove it and see if there is a change.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

I agree with Jack, looks normal to me, remove the toy and see what happens.

Another one jumping on the bandwagon here - looks perfectly fine!
