So, I have a female that is sitting on 5 eggs, the first one is due to hatch any day now. Well, last night while checking on them I noticed my yellow male was in the nest box barely moving. We removed him and he passed away a few hours later :( I have NEVER had this happen. So my question is, will the female continue to incubate the eggs, eat, and take care of the babies. I plan on handfeeding them once they turn 3 weeks. I just don't know if I am going to need to pull them earlier.....any info would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I'm not much help either since I've never bred birds. Though I know there have been people on the forum who had to pull the young from the nest much earlier than 3 weeks and they do fine hand feeding. So if it's too much for the female to care for all the babies, you may have to do that.

I have never bred....but i have read a lot....I have heard of co parenting...you help the hen feed the chicks and she still keeps them warm and looks after them. If your hen is tame you may want to research that....good luck.

There is an exotic bird sanctuary near Dayton, Ohio called Wings Over the Rainbow. The lady there will be able to advise you. She has incubated eggs and hand fed the chicks many times.

Hi - I deleted your duplicate thread and moved the one with responses to Parrotlet Breeding -- should help members find your thread.

One thing you can definitely do is put 2-3 spray millets beside the mother right away.

Then, if the mother is hand tame and allows you to handle her/the nest, you could do co-parenting with 1-cc syringes/baby formula as soon as they start hatching maybe 5-6 times a day.

The last thing but you will need another proven pair (i.e. have already raised babies) for that is you could take the first baby as soon as it hatches and put it in the nest box of the other pair and watch if they will raise it or not. Usually they will but watch for aggression.

If none of the above, call a local handfeeder in your area and ask them if they are willing to handfeed at a very young age since the first ten/twelve days you would have to feed every 2-3 hours round the clock.

Best of luck!
