Thanks!
The substrate of the nest box is a crushed corn. It's very absorbent and also it's used for the cages of the rodents.

She's been busy! Taking pictures won't scare her off her eggs, will it? Sure hope not! Some females are real particular when it comes to their babies!
I had a pair of Cockatiels years ago. I let them make babies once or twice a year, but they were very tame pets too. They are VERY mellow compared to Parrotlets! Anyway, their nest box was plexiglass (see through) on one side, and they quickly got used to it. I could watch EVERYTHING -- even watched babies hatching! It was awesome! My female (Myrna) was so tame, I could handle her babies and put them back in the nest without any problem.
But, like I said, Cockatiels are MUCH more docile than Parrotlets!

My Parrotlets are very tame pets because they are handfeeded! They allow that I touch them.
The female is a bit protective but I think that it's normal behavior in a female with eggs.

Great pictures of the eggs in the nest box. Don't you think that there should be more crushed corn in the bottom of the nest box. The weight of the parents on a newly hatched chick on the wood in the nest box could cause them to have slayed legs. I would put about 1/2 inch (1.25cm) of nesting material on the bottom of the box.

I wish I could see the nest box from a distance.
This is so new to me.
How do you have the box?Inside cage or on the side?
cris_bio
03-22-2010, 02:01 PM
The nest box is on the side for not to lose space in the cage ^^

Thats great!! :)
I heard that they get mean when they have babies? I suppose yours are tame enough :).
Do you know if they're tame if they'll go back to normal after the babies are out of the nest?
Just wondering because we plan to breed our parrotlets in the future.
its a long way off though...they're only like six weeks :P
Congrats though!!
:)

Mmmmm I don't know if I will hand feed them because I'm not experienced!
This week the good breeding one will teach me hand feed for if I needed it :)

Glad to see that you put a thicker layer on the bottom of the nest box, I have seen several new breeders not keep enough nesting material between the parents and the bottom of the nest box. It's really sad to see a bird crippled with splay legs when it could have been avoided with a little thicker layer of nesting material on the bottom.
I use oatmeal on the bottom of my boxes. If the bird goes to the bathroom in the box the oatmeal clumps up and makes it easy to remove. Also if a young chick injests the oatmeal no harm will come to them because it is a food and digestible.
If I may be of any assistance while your raising your young, just ask and I will be more than happy to help.

Thanks very much Phil!
It's very interesting to use oatmeal for the bottom of the nest boxes.
I'm going to speak it with breeders of Spain to see if they also use it and that it seems to them!
