I am new on this list. Lots of good information here! I am not new to breeding, but new to parrotlet color mutations. I need some advice. I have two visually green split parrotlets which I put together. They originally were with other mates that did not work out. I put them together to test breed. Here's what they had:

1 Albino Male, 1 Lutino Female, 1 Green Fallow Male, 1 Visual Normal Green Male, 1 Visual Normal Green Female

Imagine my surprise! I guess even a blind squirrel gets a nut once in a while LOL!!

I would like to hold back the albino male to pair up. What type of genetic split combination would be best to pair up with him to produce a larger percentage of colors, rather than visually green splits.

It's interesting, I went to the genetic calculator and put in the genetics of the pair I mentioned above. The calculator said I would have all visual green splits. ???

Your advice would be very much appreciated as well as suggestions. Keeping the fallow male and pairing him up is something I would consider also.

Thank you in advance!!

Christine

Christine,
Tough question, You noticed, not many answers. I have been breeding Parrotlets for past two years. I finally got rid of visually Green ones that I started with.
You are so lucky to get Lutino, Albino and Fallow so quickly. I finally got the same you did, but it took me two years.
I have no advice to give you in respect; how to get color ones with least green ones.
One thing I am speculating the reason you got Lutino and Albino because the parents were both split for Fallow and double split for yellow and Blue.
That is the best I can offer to your question

Tony

Now that sure is a heck of a surprise. I've done lots of reading on their genetics and here's what I know for sure...

1) About BOTH the parents:

a. One of them is split to lutino and the other to blue which is why you got the albino (which is a double recessive mutation).
b. One of them is split to fallow which is why you got the green fallow (which is a single recessive mutation).
c. The lutino comes from the parent that is split to lutino (which is a single recessive mutation).

2) About the two green babies:

They are both split to lutino, blue and fallow.

I STRONGLY suggest keeping these for breeding because by breeding greens you are producing healthy babies, keeping a strong gene pool and can pair them up with pretty much ANY mutation without fear.

3) About the three mutation babies:

a. Since they are all RED EYED, dont ever think about pairing them with another RED EYE (i.e. albino, lutino or fallow) or you will get lot of problems in the babies that you dont want (blindness is the most common!)

b. Breed them with one of the following splits:

i. Green split to blue: you will get BLUE babies + Green + Fallow + Lutino
ii. Green split to lutino and/or fallow: you will get Green + Fallow + Lutino + Albino
iii. Green split to blue, lutino and/or fallow: you will get Green + Fallow + Lutino + Albino + BLUE FALLOW + Blues
iv. Blue split to lutino and/or fallow (Least suggested but easier to find than #iii.): Less Green + Fallow + Lutino + Albino + BLUE FALLOW + More Blues.

So there ya have it, hope it's helpful!

Cheers ;)
