I don't band due to the band could get caught in something while hurting themselves. Microchip can be insert when they get older.

Lisa's got it right - you don't want to be too early or it will slip off, but if you wait too long then the foot is too big and you're out of luck. My parent birds are banded on the right leg, so that's the side the babies will get too.

Forgot to add that if the parent birds aren't banded, you want to be very careful - many don't like the idea of a foreign object on the babies and try aggressively to get it off, injuring the chick in the process.

Agreed

They suggest you do it in the evening when they are settling down for the night. To keep checking on them and if everyone is still ok the next day, then usually everything will be ok.

I pull when the oldest chick is 14 days, so that is when I band.

Isn't a parrotlet to small to be microchipped? Does anyone know of a parrotlet that has been microchipped?

Normally birds that are less than 100 grams can’t be microchipped. There are some vets who will surgically implant chips in smaller birds but they are few and far between

That's what I've heard also, that Parrotlets are too small to be microchipped.

I think micro chipping a p'let would be quite traumatic for them. It would be the equivalent of sticking a soft ball in our bodies.
