How would you make a cage for a parrotlet? Thanks!

I'd like to make my own as well... wish I knew!

You would have to use bird-safe materials - steel that is later powder-coated, stainless steel mesh or something similar. I think it's a lot cheaper and easier to buy an HQ flight cage.

There's a lot of safety concerns with making your own cage. I agree with Reta, it would be much easier and probably cheaper to buy an HQ flight cage. I have THREE and I think it's the best cage for the money!

Could you give me a link to the cage?

Here's where I got 2 of my 3 cages:
http://www.birdscomfort.com/flight_bird_cage.html
I have 3 in Platinum and love them. Right now, the black, platinum and white are $99 plus shipping, a really good deal. You can call them and find out what their shipping charge would be. I think this is now HQ's "official" website. If you scroll down the page, there's a good article on the difference between HQ cages and "copycat" cages.
I got my first HQ flight cage at WindyCity Parrot:
http://www.windycityparrot.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=19302242001&Category_Code=bestcage&Product_Count=0
It looks like it's on sale right now for $149, including shipping. I'd called BirdsComfort first though and see what their shipping charge is -- they may still be cheaper than WindyCity. It was for me, that's why I got the last 2 from BirdsComfort.
You could also do a general search for HQ 13221 Flight Cage, and see what comes up. I think most of us get ours from either WindyCity or BirdsComfort.
To confuse you even more :D, if you like one big door instead of two doors (see the pictures on the websites), here's another cage some of us have:
http://www.valuecrate.com/pcft32.html
Right now, it's $129, including shipping. Click on the link below the picture of the cage and you'll see more views of the cage. I don't personally have experience with this cage, but the size is just about the same as the HQ cage. I went with HQ because I wanted the two door model and platinum. The ValueCrate one only comes in black or white.
One other thing to add: BOTH of these cages come with a great stand that has a shelf to store bird stuff.
Hope this helps more than it confuses!

I'm making a sculptural bird cage in a class at school...in the shape of a bird! I'm not going to have it be a real bird cage though, just look like one...I suppose I could have it powder coated and make it a real cage, but I agree with jodeg that there are safety concerns and it probably isn't worth the trouble...plus my welding skills aren't quite good enough at this point to get the wire spacing totally correct. Anyway, it's a cool sculpture piece and I'll probably make a fake bird out of felt to put in there, and lots of bird toys! lol, I'll post pictures when I'm done next week!

Sounds interesting! I loved the metal class that I did in school, but boy welding was harder than it looked :)

There was an episode on martha stewart a few weeks ago where they showed how to make a parrotlet cage. I can't remember the date but maybe you could do a search on that site and find it...........

Yes i seen that episode on the internet and played the video. They used stainless steel mesh, i looked up pricing on that. Wow expensive but i am sure it would be great quality. It was a really beautiful idea for a cage though. Nice suggestion!:)

That is awesome! I'll have to watch the whole thing when I get home (I'm at work and we don't have sound on the computer). It's cool that she has a parrotlet in the video:)

Hmmm, just checked it out. I guess it won't be working for my guys. Balsa wood is too soft and i know my guys will just chew it. And there's still exposed wood on the inside... my guys will be chewing that too. Oh well, the cage looked really nice, though the finch/canary nest in Pico's cage kind of bothered me, but I'm pretty sure she got emails about it already!

I think that cage would be awesome for finches... but when Martha says she could put 2 or 3 birds in that cage kinda gave the impression that you could put in 3 parrotlets... NOT!! I also agree made of wood for a p'let would be a bad idea.

If a person used a thin plexiglass to cover the wood on the front that they use for windows? Or they could use a much harder wood i don't know. I seen someone had taken an old big screen tv and turned it into a neat bird cage. i think it was under something like homemade bird cage images. good luck!
