Well today our bird Buddie got a really bad injury. Buddie is our only bird that does not have his wings clipped. We let him fly around the room during the day which has never been a problem befor. Well today we had company over and Buddie flew up to the top of the door just as our friend was leaving, our friend shut the door and did'nt know that the bird was up there. Well it was to late when I tried to warn him that the bird was there and Buddies beak got shut in the door. A big portion of the top of his beak broke off. I called a veternarian right away and they told me what to do to get the bleeding to stop. They said to give him sugar water. I know that his beak will grow back but I don't know what he is going to be able to eat until then. We put some mango in the cage but besides fruit I'm not sure what he will be able to eat. I don't know how long it will take his beak to grow back, and I would hate for anything else to go wrong with him. If you have any suggestions on what we could do please let me know!

cook multigrain cereals ..cooked till soft veggie mash...cooked pasta finely chopped, anything that is good for him and can be cooked soft....hope he is ok...good luck.
Edit : If he has trouble scooping it up you maybe will need to hand feed it to him...poor little fella

What type of vet was it that told you to give your bird sugar water? As ParrotletsRock said I would try to feed your bird soft foods. If the birds beak is damaged so he can't eat or drink on his own Get an avian vet to teach you how to gavage feed the bird. It is very important that the bird gets enough to eat and drink while the beak is healing.

I DEFINITELY would take the bird in to the vet... while the beak will grow back, if you've damaged the bed of it, it may never grow back properly. It is imperative you make regular vet visits to an experienced vet to ensure the beak grows back in it's proper shape or it could grow in highly deformed and may interfere with his eating and regular function.
Sugar water isn't the best diet for the parrotlet for now, I would do as ParrotletsRock and Phil suggested and offer soft foods, and offer just plain water so he doesn't get dehydrated. Keep us updated, I hope he'll be ok!!

Poor little guy! Hopefully his beak will grow back just fine! Soft grains like quinoa and barley would be good. Maybe you could get some organic babyfood veggies to mix in with the grain? When I make Darcy's mash I add organic yam babyfood.
Best of luck!

So sorry he had this bad accident! He needs soft, pureed foods. Think whole grain cooked cereal (like plain oatmeal), steamed vegetables like broccoli, carrots and greens, a bit of soaked then cooked lentils (1/2 the amount of the grain) - then puree everything in a blender or food processor. He may be able to eat off the end of a small spoon. Like Phil said above, you also need to make sure he gets water.
I would take him in to an avian vet and get advice there.

Still pulling for you and the little one. Hope he is getting enough to eat and drink. If you get a moment on here we sure would appreciate you taking a moment and updating us on his condition. Saying that I also want to say that I know that this board is not the first thing on your mind and if you don't make it on to update we will understand. Good luck..praying for your little guy!!

Oh poor baby!!! Definitely take the bird to a vet just so they can assess everything for you and give you any advice as far as the healing process goes. As far as food goes, I guess it would be like a human getting dental work - soft foods are going to be the best!

Thank you everyone for the advice! Buddie is doing great! I bought a few jars of baby food and started him out with that. He started flying to the other birds cage for their seed so I mixed the seed and baby food together and he just loves it! I've been cleaning his beek everyday with a saline solution. The only bad part is he has'nt said "Pretty Bird" since his accident! hopefully one his beak is fully grown back he will start talking again.

How long will it take for the beak to grow back? Does anyone have any idea?

I don't know how fast the beak grows. I am so glad he is doing OK!
Chipper flies around also, but if visitors come it is great to keep them in the cage, so hard to watch them and it helps them stay safe.
Things can happen so quickly. I hope you keep us updated on the progress! Get well Buddie!
