Hi all!
My name is Linda and I live in the Sierra Foothills of Northern Caliifornia. I do not own a Parrotlet. I saw my first one at a Bird Mart this past weekend. It was the first bird Mart I've ever attended...had to drive 3hours to get to it. I was captivated by the little Parrotlets and want to find out more about them. Hopefully you all can help me with that. I currently have one Budgie, that I purchased almost 12 weeks ago. I haven't had a bird since I was a child (a Budgie), and had forgotten just how fun and wonderful a pet birds can be.
I'm looking forward to getting to know Parrotlets and the people on this forum.:)

Hi Linda,
I also live in the Sierra Foothills, in Rescue (near Cameron Park.) I am looking at getting a Parrotlet for my older daughter and myself. I work at home a few days a week and it would be fun to have some company hopping around the office, and she's been wanting a pet.
I did not find out about the bird mart in San Jose until just today, otherwise I would have gone as well.
Have you found a breeder in the hills yet?
Have fun!

Hello Mattz!
The San Jose Bird Mart was the first Bird Mart I have ever attended. I went there looking for a breeder to buy a second Budgie from. However, there was only one Budgie breeder there, and I wasn't too impressed with him, or what little stock he had. I did get a great cage at a very reasonable price. So now I have a "hugh" cage with still only one little budgie.
While I was at the Bird Mart, I saw my first Parrotlet ever. They had loads of them, but of course I knew nothing about them, so when I got home I started researching them. So far what I've read, I like, except for their "nippiness".:D
I have searched for budgie breeders and now Parrotlet breeders. There is a P'let breeder mentioned on this site, that is in Santa Cruz, but that is the closest one I have been able to find. ...No budgie breeders, not even in the Bay area.:(
There is another Bird Mart on June 10 at the S.F. Cow Palace. I don't know if a Bird Mart would be a place you should get a P'let from or not. I guess that would be a good question to ask here.
By the way, I live in Foresthill. If I find anything, I'll let you know, and I hope you will do the same for me. :) :) Linda
Linda,
You can eliminate the nippiness problem. I have two very feisty pacific parrotlets and I have not been nipped in almost 7 years.

I have read that it is not a good idea because sometimes you get inexperienced or "bad" breeders that bring birds that are sick or old and try to pass them off as healthy or young so that they don't have to have the sick ones anymore. Now I am definitely NOT saying all breeders would do this, and many people get perfectly healthy and happy birds from marts, but it has happened before.
To avoid this problem, if it was me, I look at the Bird Mart's info website, if they have one, or contact whoever is organizing it. They will know the names of the vendors and breeders that are coming, then you can contact the breeders and check out their credibility ahead of time or talk to them directly about getting a bird instead of just blindly buying a bird. That's my personal opinion, but that's just what I would do.

I know where Rescue CA is :) -
I live in Placer County :D
The Breeder in Santa Cruz Linda Lee mentioned is probably the Parrotlet Ranch – run by Sandee & Robert Molenda – I got my female there last month. They are very well known in the Parrotlet world.
Although I would inquire on the level of taming – my female although hand fed was not very tame so I had to put a lot of work into her. But she is beautiful and very healthy.
Here is the link if you are interested: http://parrotletranch.com/ (http://parrotletranch.com/)
There is also the Bird Store in Sacramento – that is top notch and usually has very good stock – if you want I can find the address and phone number.
