I just opened my volkman's soak and simmer
it says to let soak overnight which I did
I boiled it and returned to a boil -- now it says simmer until
beans are tender--- does anyone have an estimate of time?
I've been simmering for about 15min....

Hi Steph, I simmered it for a full 45 minutes until everything was tender. Cabo the quaker looked at me like I had put poison in her dish, Hadji flung it every where and Frankie the CAG, picked out the lentils and spit them on the carpet. My guys hate it, they would rahter have plain old brown rice mixed with soaked wheat berrys .

One thing I'd like to add... often it's cheaper to go to your local bulk barn, of bulk food section of your grocery store and buy small little bits of everything that is in the Bird Soak mix. Every 3 months I buy mung beans, adzuki beans, green lentils, wild rice, jade rice with dried peas, flax seed, hulled hemp seed, whole wheat pasta, buckwheat, quinoa and amaranth....and maybe a few other things I'm forgetting... and the small amount I need costs me between 5 and 10 dollars. Typically I spend 15 to 20 dollars everytime I go and I usually buy spices and other things for my own cooking that isn't for the birds (ie. chocolate chips lol). It's dirt cheap. I get funny looks for buying such small portions... but it provides great conversation when I say it's for the birds. lol!

Yeah they kinda picked at it and flung it around--
I wound up simmering around 25 min or so because the water got kinda low
it smelled like boiled hot dogs or something in my apartment
not very appetizing. Might try the store kind instead

I'm not familiar with the Volkman's mix, but any mix with legumes after soaking overnight, draining and adding fresh water, needs to be boiled 10 minutes then simmered 20 minutes. That should do it. Grains of course can be fed after overnight soaking, rinsing and draining, or can be sprouted another 12 to 24 hours, or cooked.
