Hi everyone!!

Can any of you tell me what chances I have to get two mature parrotlets to bond, if neither one has been around other birds before?? I would like to get a female for my male but I'm scared that they will hate each other and then I'll be stuck with two seperate parrotlets and two cages. I know there's no guarantee but let me know if the chances are low.

Any help would be sooo sooo soooooooooooo appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Agnes

agz,
You have a good chance. I will tell you more later. I must go feed my parrotlets.

Parrotlets are social birds and like having a friend or mate, usually! There always is a risk that they might not like each other, but chances are in your favor. Think about it carefully beforehand to make sure you're willing to keep them separately if need be.

Agnes,

You have a 99% chance that they will bond. If you are skeptical to introduce a new mate, do this:

Place a new mate in a separate cage and place them very close so they can actually touch beaks. After about 1-2 weeks if you can see them interacting with good intentions place them together. I would watch them for a wile to see that they like each other.
Presently I am working with 20 pairs. Sometime I exchange mates even if they are "bonded" to the other mate. Normally they stay away from each other until they decide to try each other. They will also bicker(fight) at time, it is their nature, just like humans do.
I have two pairs that I have exchanged their mates recently. It took one week and one pair already has their first egg.

If you purchase a parrotlet, make sure it is a young bird. If the parrotlet has a bright white yellowish eyeball ring it is an old bird.
They will not breed. If they do, the eggs may be infertile.
I will give you an example of pictures below.
The first picture is a young bird it has dark eye balls, say 1 month up to 4 months. At about 4-5 months old, the eye ring becomes visible in a bright light. From then on progressively the pupil eye ring become brighter and brighter until it reaches to be two year old. From then on the eyeball ring becomes bright to its maximum and you can't tell how old the bird is.
If you really want to see babies in a near future I would purchase a 4-6 months old Parrotlet. From my experience they will breed at 7 months old.
All the information above is from my own observations and experience.

Good luck!
Tony

Agnes,

In this picture you can see the eye ring of the older parrotlet. This should give you an idea what I am talking about.
Personally I would not purchase this bird for the breeding purpose.

raiven,
thanks for the complement for my granddaughter's picture. That picture was not intended to be posted. It was a mistake. Do you or anybody else know how to remove it. I would appreciate the help.

Aw, We have to get rid of the cute baby pic? OK...

Go to your User CP at the top of the page. Look at the bottom of the list for attachments and click on that. Check the file you want to delete and press delete. See my attachment.

Cheers!

Raiven, You take good pictures. Are you using a "Macro lens" for closeups? What kind of camera are you using?
