As most of you know, I'm new to parrotlets, and I have had my baby boy Figgy since Dec. 26th But I am not new to birds, seeing as I have had budgies all my life, and currently have two, healthy, hand tame, 1 year old boys.

I am a bit worried that he is not recieving enough hours of PROPER quiet sleep, and I have read sleep is very important to have a healthy little bud.:(

Figgy gets covered up at around or a little before 9 pm. i only leave the back that faces the wall uncovered so he doesn't have night frights and for ventilation.

The thing is, he is down stairs, in the office which is adjescent to the living room. My parents stay in the living room with the TV on and talking until about midnight, and then then my mom stays down and watches TV and it doesnt go off until at least 1:30 am or maybe even not at all. While I have peeked through the back of the cage and seen him with his head tucked under his wing and on his sleeping perch, I wonder if he is able to sleep nicely through it.

Also usually me or my older sister stays up on one of the coputers in the office until 10:30 or 11:00 pm completing homework, as this is the only time available for us to do it once we get off work.

My budgies stay upstairs in my bedroom and go to bed immediately after him, but they have peace and quiet to sleep, lights out, no one bugs them, and I even turn off all 5 of my fish/turtle filters and lights. The space heater I have in my room gets turned on at this point, because my room is FREEZING, and I want them to at least sleep in warmth, though now they are adjusted to this winter cold in my room (i am right above the fire place, it makes it chilly in the winter) no drafts though. I wake up at about 5:30 am and go about taking care of my chickens and rabbit and other morning things, and uncover the keets before I leave for school at about 6:30 ish.

I am worried that Figgy isnt getting good sleep. I can't make my parents go to bed earlier or turn off the TV, and there is really no way me and my sister can help the computer thing.

Should I purchase a small "parakeet" cage from petsmart and put him upstairs in my room for sleeping? or do you think he is ok?

I'm so worried, I wouldnt realy mind spending the 30 bucks on a small cage for sleeping, as long as I have enough money left to pay my pony's board.

thanks for any help guys, and I'm sorry for this rediculously long thread. :/

I also forgot to mention that Figgy probably gets woken up when he hears me get ready in the morning around 6 am, even though he doesnt get uncovered until probably 8:30 am.

My birds get covered around midnight, and then they're chirping for breakfast between 8:30 and 9:30, typically at 9 though. So that isn't a full twelves hours.. but they do nap frequently throughout the day and a bit in the late evening. I've had Jack, my parrotlet since september and he's doing fine. Very rarely is he in a grumpy.

If you want, you can give him a sleep cage. There are few members here who do it. It's up to you.

Good to know. Since my mom works from home, and the phone is constantly ringing, I doubt he gets many naps in during the day.

I am actually considering doing the sleep cage, it just seems like the fair thing to do, and once I get into a routine with it, he will probably get accustomed quickly to it.

thank you :D

I'm sure Figgy is just fine. He's in a room adjacent to a room with the TV? Herbie is right NEXT to my TV. In my family room. He sleeps like the dead after we cover him at about 8:00 p.m. He's up and ready to go when I uncover him at about 7:45 a.m. Figgy's probably already used to your schedule and the noise. So long as he's not grumpy or showing any signs of stress, I'm sure he's just fine.

well actually, that's what's worrying me. hes been quite aggressive and grumpy for the past 2 weeks or so, and biting my fingers and face really hard at the slightest thing, he's also been jumping off me a lot just when i touch him, and he used to adore being touched. so... yea. thats my concern.

but thank you so much!

You got Figgy at the end of December? Do you know how old he was? Herbie went into his first molt at only 4 months and man was he crabby that first week! (Just a thought)

Figgy is now only about 3 months old.... And I dont see many feathers in his pan when i clean it, or any pin feathers.....

But, it could be he's going INTO the molt soon.... thanks!

I think I would try the smaller sleep cage upstairs so he can get a full 12 hours of sleep. I try to make sure mine get a full 12 hrs.

Darcy too, is right next to the TV. He usually puts himself to sleep. I made him this little fleece cozy that he hides in. Usually around 8pm he goes in it and goes right to sleep. Sometimes he'll go to sleep earlier, at like 7pm. When I see he's asleep, I cover him. Darcy isn't ever grouchy, so I think he's fine. If Figgy is being grumpy, though I'd put him upstairs. I'm sure he'll get used to his sleep cage. Sounds like a baby being upset he's moving from a crib to a "big boy" bed.
