Not sure if I should put this here or in the breeding section
On another forum, someone was asking if birds "need" to lay eggs. Is there any health benefits of getting them to lay eggs every once in a while or is it perfectly ok to discourage all egg laying?
This is for nonbreeding birds.

Nope, I have never heard that hens need to lay eggs to be healthy. Just like a dog or cat doesn't need to have a litter, or a woman doesn't need to have a baby. For a non-breeding pet bird, I wouldn't encourage egg laying at all, not providing nesty places, etc. Sometimes you can't stop them though!
On the contrary, I have heard that letting them lay eggs uses up calcium, so can be a health risk.

Hello my name is Karleen, and I am sort of a new Parrolet Owner, and I am in need of some information Assistance. :)
I got my bird pretty young as far as I know and I have never noticed that she laid an egg before not long ago and I am very curious about this and am kind of worried.
My husband had found something online about the birds laying egg and that it can be harmful to them and that you may have to give them some kind of calcium diet or drops to keep them heathly. I am interested in any information about this problem for I do not want any harm to come to my little friend but I do not know any true information about this.
Please If you have any helpful information please private message me or email me at karauby@hotmail.com
Thank you for your time...
