We're constantly trying to improve our site. But we need your help! If there's a specific feature you'd like to see added to our site, please tell us in this thread! We'll do our best to try to add it.

thanks dave! i hope more people will use this feature - it makes the threads more fun to read and you start to recognize people by their avatar.

Hi, not sure if this is a feature, but how about a DIY (do it yourself) area? I make a basic chew/destroyable toy my birds enjoy. I would love if I could get directions on how others make toys or other things for their birds.

Hi Dave,
It would be nice to have an area with links to parrotlet care. There is a lot of information out there that would be useful to members.

Dave, I am a member of another board (as well as this one!), and would enjoy recipes or food ideas that people have found helpful with their plets. Obviously, this would fall under health, but I would enjoy a separate catagory as well. Love this board! Jan

Dave
please add 2 more sections, on "general parrotlet info" where i can post info on general care/mutations etc.

I have been adding things on the different mutations etc. but not really sure when to put it

and also
a housing section? where people can post their cage set up, links to cage suppliers, cage sizes etc.

thanks dave

I am new and sgould not be asking but what about a toy section where people can post about their birds favorite toys??

Kumiko

What about a section called "Parrotlet Behavior and Anatomy"
Topics on physical features, colors, growth & development, noises, and assorted behaviors.

And probaly another called "Parrotlet Housing and Accessories" Topics on properly housing your parrotlet. Where can I buy cages or how do I make them myself. What mateials are safe to use? What about toys, seed cups and other accessories.

And, I think it would be fun to make a section called "Parrotlet's Voice" A place where your pets can talk to each other. No humans allowed!

Well, that is all my ideas. hopefully there is one that you like!

I personally preffer having different sites for different birds. I am a member on a few "all" bird forums, and it can get very hectic. Just my opinion though :)

How about a spot for links to favorite sites for toys and food?? I haven't seen anything like that here.

And probaly another called:

"Parrotlet Housing and Accessories" Topics on properly housing your parrotlet. Where can I buy cages? Projects that I want to do. What mateials are safe to use? What about toys, seed cups, and other accessories?

I think that would be a whole lot better than posting those types of things in the General Section.

I am really for this!:D

How about an EASY BUTTON. LOL. The housing section would be great. That's my big dilema right now, before getting the parrotlet. I think most people think little 5 inch bird, little shoe box to house them in (seriously I knew a guy in college that housed a lovebird in a plastic shoe box with holes until his girlfriend made him give it to her, after a few choice words). She finally, bought it an indoor aviary.

A Diet section, maybe that goes under health might be good.

oops, i wish i would have seen this before the other one. i'll try again

this is my second (now third) post on this forum... i've just joined today to learn as much information as i can about parrotlets before i own one. some things that would be nice:

Parrotlet Housing and Accessories

Parrotlet Behavior and Anatomy

Parrotlet Diet and Nutrition

Parrotlet Classifieds
(for people that make and sell toys, treats, maybe even sell cages and miscellaneous parrotlet things... and also a place where breeders can advertise or anyone that is selling their birds can post. also a good place to post supplies wanted or even parrotlets wanted.)

I like things as they are really--
I just generally click the 'new posts' button to check in
and can generally find a folder to use when posting.
I don't really want classified ads or all that
Thanks!

Kumiko

A classified section wouldnt be active as much, but it would keep the selling and pricing topics away from interesting and fun topics. It would be a lot more organized... but it would be a waste of space for the admin. and more responsiblities for the moderators keeping watch of trolls.

But I would wait until this forum gets more popular to add one.

I beleive the thing to add is Parrotlet Housing and Accessories

Diet and everything else is covered in "Parrotlet Health" and behaviors and all that junk is in "Parrotlet Bonding and Training". You mostly get the memo about "Bonding" as being about behavior.

----If anything, I would section off each section into seperate folders.

EX. The section, "Parrotlet Bonding and training" can have different sections withi nthat section like "Parrotlet behavior", "parrotlet Bonding", and "Parrotlet Training".

Much like this (look at their sections): http://www.vivariumforum.com/community/

In one section: http://www.vivariumforum.com/community/paludarium/

But I beleive when the forum gets more popular... it would be a good idea to be more specific and organized. This is all up to Dave though.

Hope I helped! :)

EDIT: I just noticed.... when I was a much new member, I kept posting the same thing over and over again. lol Sorry if I annoyed anyone about this in the past or my "just recent" post.

Why would we need a different section for each kinda of bird, isn't this a parrotlet forum? Just wondering. I like things the way they are usually all you have to do is a search of the subject and there is plenty of info. A bereavement section would be great its not already info that is here already.

I agree with Granny! This is a Parrotlet forum -- no need for sections for different kinds of birds. If someone has other types of birds, of course it's find to post pictures and/or talk about them, but this is a forum dedicated to Parrotlets.

AvianAvenues has a ton of different sections, including one for different kinds of birds, P'lets included. The P'let section isn't very active though. I don't visit very often, guess I'm more drawn to our cozy little P'let forum! :D

Re: other birds section

I'm a member of a lovebirds forum and have really become close with the community there. The main bulk of the forum is dedicated to lovebirds, but there's one section under the heading "Other Parrots" and within that section a list of other individual parrot species to post in.

Its nice to be able to discuss the other species of parrot I keep with my friends there, and to read about theirs. Its a small part of the forum, relative to the many other areas specifically dedicated to lovebirds, but its a nice feature that works out well.

I don't see how it would interfere with the search function, as when the list came up you would see right away that a post is from the "quaker" or "eclectus" section... anyhow, as I have seen this sort of feature work, these posts are such a small volume compared to the lovebird posts that it isn't really a problem. It could also be set up so as to be excluded from the search function.

I hope to become better acquainted with this forum, as 2/5 of the feathered family in my flock are parrotlets- but as I get to know you all, it would be nice to have a place to discuss our other parrots that wouldn't encroach on the parrotlet topic.

As it is, people post about other types of birds on here all the time, if they had an appropriate out of the way area to do so, it would just make things more organized.

A reference section with links page would be excellent. This can be a good place to compile FAQ information, recipes, health & housing info... a good place for new parrotlet parronts and/or breeders to get quality and concise information fast.

I also 2nd or 3rd or 4th a "Rainbow Bridge" or "Memorial" section.

01-25-2010, 07:32 PM
I think a rainbow bridge section would be great! (I don't know what you would call the section on a bird forum but that's what it's called on my rabbit forum!;))

Also I think it would be really fun to have a section where our pets could talk to each other! ;)

I would love to see an instant messaging type feature added to the forum. I am on an African Grey forum with my Grey and they have that feature. It is very popular and everyone seems to get to know each other better. If there is a conversation going on, anyone can jump in. You may have 2 people at one point and 7 within minutes. Its really helpful also if you are having an issue that you need help with right away. I think all forums need theis feature. There are people that are assigned to the chat to watch over and make sure that nothing is being talked about other than animal related and nice stuff. No hooking up or bad/negative discussion. If so they get the boot. Do you think this will ever happen?

Although I do not post here often, I often read here. One thing that has always bothered me about this site is that as soon as I have opened a post under the new posts threads it dissappears. IThere is no way to mark it as unread so it will stay under new posts. I guess it goes to it's category. But when I want to see it again or answer it at a later time I can never find it. On other sites posts in new posts stay there until I answer them or until I mark them as read. Thanks for listening.

Is there a way to make an option to change your default color of type, when you post? I always change my type to blue, but I know that on some threads, you can change the default color so it automatically types in the color/size/font that you want.....

I think you've done a great job separating out the different forum topics, but you could tweak them a bit. I already like the way you've arranged the forum, since I tend to think that "less is more." :)

First, I would keep this information "stickied" right above the forum:

SO, YOU THINK YOU WANT A PARROTLET [ general information about parrotlet - where from, size, personality, etc.; photos of types and mutations; minimum requirements for keeping a parrotlet - large cage, types of food, interaction with humans, warning about caging multiples] No posting allowed here, and it wouldn't have to be "that" lengthy.

I agree! Food Recipes, links to various care-sites, info-sites, etc. and maybe even updating the photoplog so that instead of just reading the names of the pictures & then looking at them it takes more of a 'slideshow' format? :D

And maybe if the inbox's could hold more than 100 messages, that would be cool! I always forget to empty mine. :P

This might have already been said, or be horribly tacky, but how about a feedback function? similar to a 'like' button? could be called 'Kudos', or 'Cheeps'.... Frequently I read a post and want to show that I liked it, but I have nothing relavant to add, so I say nothing. Just an idea =D

RookieBlue

That would be pretty cool, actually. I have had some similar thoughts. What might also be cool is a "birdie" or "picture" of the week. Or maybe member of the week? Where throughout the week there will be a poll where you can nominate / vote for people who you feel have been helping out really well, and then at the end of the week the person with the highest votes gets their picture of choice placed on one of the main pages?

The thread subscription feature is very similar to what you are both suggesting.

At the top of a thread, click open up the Thread Tools menu (right above the top post). Select "Subscribe to this Thread".

Then go your Edit Options (http://talkparrotlets.com/profile.php?do=editoptions) page. In the second area "Messaging and Notification", look for the Default Thread Subscription Mode option. You can choose how you wish to be notified of new posts in the thread.

You can see your list of subscribed threads on the front page of the control panel (http://talkparrotlets.com/usercp.php).

I think a Memorial forum would be nice. To remember those parrotlets lost. Maybe also certain sections like US, Canada, Europe. Just so parrotlet fans could go to those specific forums and if they wanted to chat to people from their nation. - I had this on a reptile forum and it was nice to check to see if there was anything happening in your area IE bird shows or whatnot. Rather then a general forum where it could become lost in the threads and missed.

Dear Administrator Dave, I am brand new to an internet forum and to TalkParrotlet.com and having difficulties. Would you please consider a New Member Orientation feature addressing the very basics of navigating on the forum site like:
What is the difference between a Post and a Thread?
How and When to Post or Start a Thread.
How to use the Search feature. (Do you use it to find an answer before starting a new thread?)
How to change your user name.
