I have heard dont put a older male with a young female. I would like to get Jay a mate. He is 2yr old. What would be the youngest female I could put with him?

I would slowly intoduce him to a 12 to 14 month old female. Any younger he may get aggressive and hurt her if he wanted to mate and she was to young and rejected his advances.

Not really "a year younger" but ... well, if we were talking people, you want to introduce a hen that is "of legal age". We don't recommend breeding a hen before she's 12 months.. 14 months is even better.

To add a question to this thread....if I got a young female and placed her cage beside my old (sexually mature) male's cage, would that be ok? would i still be able to bond these two birds once the female is of a good age, or would the fact their cages are beside each other while one was growing up reduce the chances of them bonding??

Every Parrotlet is relatively different, just like people are. Every Parrotlet will interact differently to its mate. Just like people do.
It is very hard to give exact advice. Therefore, I will tell you a story of one of my recent breeding pair of Parrotlets.

The Blue male Parrotlet named Frank was about 7 months old when I introduced him to a 4 months old Yellow(American) parrotlet which I named Goldie. I just put them together in the breeding cage. It was love at first site. From the first day
Frank made love with Goldie. Goldie did exactly, what she was supposed to do. Frank did also, what he was supposed to do. This love affair lasted two months. Every time I came in the bird room Frank an Goldie was making love. After two months of love making Goldie went in to nest box and laid her first egg. Goldie is now six months old and Frank is nine months old.
After 20 days the first baby hatched and within 9 days they all hatched.
They have 5 babies.
You can see Frank and Goldie in my Avatar.

Frank was purchased, Goldie was hatched in my bird room. Goldie's mother is Fallow/Yellow(AM) and father is Green/Yellow(AM).
One of Goldie's baby has red eyes which most likely is a Fallow. Therefore, Frank is split to Fallow which I didn't know.
This is a true story, not a heresay or fiction.

Well the reson I asked the question is cause i have a breeding pair and one lonely male. But is he two years old. I was going to take a female from one of the clucthes and put with him. But father0fseven said she should be at least 12 months of age. I would love to put a green female with him. But my pair is mostly giving me males. This clucth I have one female but she is blue =)
