View Full Version : Looking for Experienced breeders. Help
Well,
I put up a box in June when my pair were about 1 year and no deal. Took it down sometime in August. Put it up again about a month ago and they showed a lot more interest. Yesterday the hen was in the box most of the day. Today almost the entire day with only a two or three trips out of the box. Right now it sure looks like she's planning on sleeping in the box.
I know there was no egg this morning. I tap the box every morning and look inside to get them used to it. I don't think there is one now.
But are eggs imminent if she's in the box all day and now bedding down in the box?

yes, sounds like she is getting ready to lay. 2 pairs of mine sleep in their nest boxes but they are always there together. If she is going in by herself ..more than likely she is getting ready to lay.(how exciting for you).

any eggs yet??
Yes, There was an egg yesterday morning. And two today. I thought they would show up every other day. I check first thing in the morning when she comes out for a moment.
So, if they hatch in 21 days, I'm expecting the first to hatch on the December 22 or 23. Christmas babies.
It's going to call for some coordination, I'm closing on a house on the 28th. But I may move that to the 23rd so I can use the holidays to move. I have the apartment until January 31 so the p'lets will be the last thing to move.

P'lets incubation period is 18-19 days. Is this their first clutch??
Yes, it's their first clutch. They're about 18 monthes (female) and 16 monthes (male).
OK,
I feel like an idiot. Today at lunch I found an egg on the grate. I put it in the box with the other two. She's still heavy. I'm sure it must really have been the first egg.

yup sometimes they just drop an egg from the perch. Well try not to stress or feel to bad about anything that happens. this is their 1st time ( your 1st time??) so there maybe some "duds". Let her sit and play mommy until the eggs hatch or the last egg laid is at least a good few days late of hatching, then go from there.
Yesterday she laid egg #4. Given the timing of all the eggs, I'm now pretty sure the egg I found on the grate was egg #3 and I found it at the first opportunity, rather than being egg #1 laid 4 or 5 days before I say it.
I'm already proud of her, I though with her first clutch she might lay one 1 or 2 eggs.
