I got Zazu at 3 weeks old that I handfed, at a bird show at the end of the day and they were closing and I forgot to get the lady's name and number and so I was able to trace zazu's leg band thru The Parrotlet Alliance Society and found out her name is susan and she said that Zazu was born in the first week of august and I asked what color his parents are and they are a green pair but are split for blue and yellow as they produce blue, yellow and green babies!! So does that mean that Zazu is split for blue and yellow? Thanks, Melissa

Melissa,
Is Zazu Green? If he is, then he can be:
18.75 % Blue
18.75 % Green split to Yellow
6.25 % Blue split to yellow
56.25 % Green
The above are possibilities and the only way you can discover is to breed him.

Melissa, please note: I made a correction of results, providing Zazu is Green.

Yes Zazu is green and his parents are green but produce greens, blues and yellows!!

Wow, parrotlet color genetics is complicated!

Not really all that complicated. Think of the "blue" coloring in birds as "hair color" in humans and the "yellow" coloring in birds as the "eye color" and you get a better idea. They actually two different characteristics. We get a green parrotlet when the gene for "blue" is ON and the gene for "yellow" is ON (blue + yellow = green).
So, Zazu's parents are green. They *might* have passed the "Blue-off" gene or the "Yellow-off" gene to Zazu but there is no promises and no way of knowing without trying to breed Zazu to another bird that can produce blue and/or yellow babies.

Melissa,
Is Zazu Green? If he is, then he can be
Tony -
I made the assumption that both of Zazu's parents are Green/Blue Dilute... to be green and produce the colors indicated?
If that is so, these would be the odds for Zazu's genetics:
12% Green
22% Green / Dilute
22% Green / Blue
44% Green / Blue Dilute

Darren,
Zazu's parents produce Yellow's, Blue's and Greens. If that is true, then
that means the parents are not double split. I use the calculator:http://www.gencalc.com/ Green X Green /Blue yellow(am.)
and I get these results:
25.0% green
25.0%green /yellow(am.)
25.0%green /blue 25.0%
25.0%green /blue yellow(am.)
Darren, I am very much interested in genetics and I see you are also interested. Please give me a call if you don't mind 310 833 7349
These results are different from my previous post.

It's my opinion that Gencalc gets "Am. Yellow" wrong. As soon as it came up with a chance for a bird that is Green Am. Yellow (note, not green split to Am. Yellow, but a mixture of Green Am. Yellow similar to our white ones called Blue Dilute) I became suspect. You have to use "Dilute" which is the proper term for "Am. Yellow" anyway.

Melissa, Here is my final result for Zazzu after consulting with the originator of the Gencalc, Mr Martin Resek from the Czech Republic.
The parents of Zazzu are both green split for Blue and Yellow, and his possible genetic makeup is listed below.:)
1.0 green /blue yellow(am.)
x 0.1 green /blue yellow(am.)
% from all 1.0
6.25% 1.0 green
6.25% 1.0 green yellow(am.)----------visual yellow
12.5% 1.0 green /yellow(am.)
12.5% 1.0 green /blue
12.5% 1.0 green yellow(am.) /blue-------------visual yellow
25.0% 1.0 green /blue yellow(am.)
6.25% 1.0 blue
6.25% 1.0 blue yellow(am.)-------------------visual Blue Dilute(white)
12.5% 1.0 blue /yellow(am.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
% from all 0.1
6.25% 0.1 green
6.25% 0.1 green yellow(am.)-------------------visual Yellow
12.5% 0.1 green /yellow(am.)
12.5% 0.1 green /blue
12.5% 0.1 green yellow(am.) /blue---------------visual Yellow
25.0% 0.1 green /blue yellow(am.)
6.25% 0.1 blue
6.25% 0.1 blue yellow(am.)---------------------Visual Blue Dilute(white)
12.5% 0.1 blue /yellow(am.)
